Gaslight Commons or other rentals in SOMA?

I rented at Gaslight Commons for a while before deciding to buy a condo in town.  I found management to be responsive when there was a problem.  The location is perfect for anyone commuting because the train station is virtually around the corner.  Renters run the gamut from young singles to families with children to senior citizens.  Gaslight Commons seems to be a good choice for people who want to become better acquainted with the area before buying a house or condo.

The same management company will be running a new building going up at the corner of Third Street and Valley, just on the other side of the railroad tracks.  I don't know when that building will be ready for occupancy, though.

Good luck with your search.

A friend of mine lived in Gaslight Commons for several years. It was convenient for work and school. She has since moved into a home of her own in a near-by town. If I recall, she really enjoyed living in the development, loved the convenience to the trains and never had any complaints about the management or services. She moved since she and her husband wanted to have children and wanted a back-yard and garden of their own, not because of any problems with GC.

welcome to the area! Several of my friends live in GC and would be happy to chat about it. PS Their teens babysit!! Let me know if you want contact info.

Thank you all for the replies, they are very helpful. We are going with GC. It's kind of nerve-wracking to sign a lease from the other side of the country without going to see it for yourself.

deborahg, would love to chat about it, thanks!

I have lived in The Gas Light for 6 years now and my MIL for 2.

I'd say that management was pretty good for a while.  The current team is the worst we have ever had.

The property Internet service is 10+ years old and is under management by a company that has something like a 20 contract.  The contracted speed rates were 5 and 1.  That is all.  That is all that the infrastructure will provide.  Often it is worse.  Last night my wife could not upload a file and at the same time our Smart TV could not connect.  I ran Speed Test and we were getting 0.16 Down and 2.60 Up.

Local management does not understand what I just wrote and the office will tell you that every thing is ok, you must have a hardware problem.  Or, they will tell you that they are working with the data company, it should be fixed soon.

Drill up and get to Corporate and they will tell you no changes in sight for years.  They are trying to break the contract but are having problems.

No other vendor can install on the property.

So, if Internet (and they charge you $60 per month for the service) is important to you, think hard.  Pulling data out of the air with a local hot spot device is much faster.  But, you pay for that and you still have to pay TGC the $60 per month.

Still, I like the location the units, and the amenities.  I just have a fight over this Internet speed issue. (and so do many of us)

Sent you a private message @mxg86!

The only complaint I hear from people moving out of GC is the cost. I have to presume you already know the monthly rent for the units.

I have two friends who lived there and had issues with noise and noise complaints. The walls floors are very thin. You can hear people walking above you.

We lived there for 6 months after we closed on our house before we moved out to LA and really enjoyed it.  The internet is a huge downside if you like to stream anything.  It's like the stone age.  I would also say try to get an apartment on the 4th floor so no one is above you and preferable not one facing the parking lot/train tracks.  The walls are thin but most tenants are respectful.  We did meet a few people who had some issues with noise.  The units are nice and the property was very well maintained.  And it's pet friendly.
