Front outer glass door just flew open in the wind and shattered - thoughts on replacing door handle?

Who do I call to replace the glass and hopefully clean up and take away the broken glass?

And who do I call to replace the old, falling apart door handle and latch that allowed this to happen in the first place?

And thanks to my Maplewood Avenue neighbors for calling the police, thinking that someone's house was just broken into. I saw the police searching and let them know the wind was the thief that stole my glass door.

It's always something.

Oh, no. Sorry to hear this. Hope it all gets sorted out.

Thanks, cats. We just don't seem to get along with glass.

Years ago, one of the glass sliding doors on our bath fell into the tub and shattered into a million crystals while Mr. Jasper was in the shower. Another time, our oven door shattered spontaneously for no apparent reason while I was upstairs minding my own business, sending glass bits all over the kitchen. And just on Monday, a rock hit my windshield while driving on the Parkway and made one of those small star-shaped cracks on the passenger side near the bottom. I'm sort of hopeful that that last one will stay put, but the odds are not on my side. : - (

Get that last one patched, so it does stay put. I had one of those. Took me about a year, but I finally got it filled in. It doesn't look any better (not sure what I was expecting), but I hope it will not spread.

We must be related. We once had a rear car window implode in our driveway in very hot weather (suspected vandals or thieves briefly). Another time a crystal basket thingie (wedding present) full of berries shattered into a zillion little pieces for no good reason.

Thanks, zucca. You reminded me that in that same car, both visor mirrors, which we rarely use, were found to be cracked after a hot summer, and had to be replaced. I'll call my car insurance company tomorrow to see what our windshield repair coverage is.

And the glass shattering thing is hereditary; the spontaneous oven door explosion happened to my mom as well!

Wasn't there a superhero that had the power of vibration? Wait a minute... that doesn't sound like something for kids...

I remember now, I think it was that the Flash was so fast that he could vibrate through solids? I guess he didn't shatter them tho.

As soon as I saw this I thought of your oven door! Good luck!!

Thanks, haus. And then there was the time that I knocked over a glass measuring cup filled with simple syrup (to make homemade lemonade instead of buying ready-made like normal people do) 5 minutes before my son's birthday party was meant to start. Did I mention that we have a most hateful ceramic tile floor in our kitchen, and that it doesn't get along well with glass either? Holy crap, what a mess that was.

Did you find a way to get it fixed? If you need to keep the rain out during the festivities for the next few days, I suggest covering it with a sheet of plywood. Seriously. You may not have time to get the door fixed properly before the flood. And it sounds like you need the barrier.

You can take the frame to Bunchers Hardware in downtown Millburn and they can replace the glass for you.

For a complete door overhaul, I have heard good things about HG Edwards in Summit.

Thanks, Petunia, but I am not up to unhinging a door full of huge glass shards. Perhaps a picture will help. Be right back...

And where do I dispose of all this:

I'd replace that with a laminated or safety glass this time....

I called Orange Glass. The guy will be here within an hour, and I'll see what he recommends. Safety glass seems like a good idea, kmk.

Did you call Orange Valley Glass or Orange Glass? I was just getting ready to call Orange Valley about a broken storm window.

I called Orange Glass. They had good ratings on Yelp. The guy came and removed all the broken glass from both the door and the ground. Now he's going to get the piece of replacement glass, and they're going to put in safety glass this time. He also offered to try to fix the door set so it stays closed when you close it, at least until I can order a replacement. And he recommended getting a spring door closer so that the door favors staying closed rather than blowing open in the wind.

Are all cats accounted for?

Yes, thanks, tjohn. All we have left indoors is Eloise, and she doesn't venture out. I was more concerned that the outdoor crew would cut their paws on the broken glass, but they were too busy mooching around out back.

Here's what we currently have on the door:

And here's the wonkiness:

And this is the strike plate:

Yes, we're in desperate need of a paint and cleanup job, but I want to do our kitchen first. That thread coming soon.

And here's what I'm thinking of ordering: http://www.rejuvenation.com/catalog/products/benson

Nice. If you don't get the version with the key lock, choose the kind with the thumblock on the inside.

You've got to fix the jamb and strike plate first. It looks like that is where the problem is.

The guy who replaced the glass shimmed out the strike plate and the door is latching fine now. I should have done it myself a long time ago; I just recently did it for our bedroom closet door and it's pretty easy to do, but somehow we were focused on the wonky knob instead of the plate. The knob works fine, even though it's loose.
