Found dog - reunited with owner

My friend posted this on Facebook:

This beautiful dog was found on Berkeley Avenue near Heywood today. A neighbor posted the photo to a local e-group. The two women who found it were going to take it to a Newark Animal Shelter tonight.

If you know this dog and its owners, please let them know. Breaks my heart

My husband and I have several times found a dog similar to that one wandering in the area. We cannot swear it is same dog but my husband remembers the house (it's in Heywood between Berkeley and Irving Terrace) where the people live. He does not know the address but knows it by sight if it is the same dog.

They took the dog to AHS. I asked if they called our ACO but they didn't. I went to the BOT meeting tonight to ask where we can take a lost animal and I was told simply call the ACO and she will try to take them to a local vet if they have room. This will get really bad in the Spring, it we don't have a contract with a shelter. Sad. I saw a recent article where an animal was killed at AHS who was supposed to be held. Hopefully people will be motivated to plead with our town for a concrete solution. Of course I am talking about South Orange, as I know Maplewood has a contract with St. Hubert's.

You have advocated for animals on MOL so I hope you will join some of the threads that are striving to have a shelter in SOMa again.

Just saw that this dog belongs to a woman who lives on Vose Avenue.  Info comes from Michael Gillespie who posted it on NextDoor Borden Park.  Does anyone know if the dog has been reclaimed?  I am pasting in the post about the dog here.

It belongs to a woman who lives on Vose Avenue; not sure exactly where. I found the dog one time in my yard and reported it to the police, who came and got it. The police informed me that the dog gets loose frequently and they have returned it to its owner on multiple occasions. Apparently the dog can get out the front door on its own, and the owner seems oblivious of this. Sad.

last night I read that they brought the dog to Newark. I have no idea what has transpired since, since this is  all second or third hand info through the block email loop. I sent a message saying that Newark is a high kill shelter, but have no idea who found  the dog and how to get in touch. My suggestion is the owner on Vose should call the Newark shelter ASAP.

I have been told that phoning the shelter is insufficient.  The dog's human companion should go down to the shelter with any documentation s/he may have that establishes the dog is their's.

I meant to call asap as a preventive measure.

Phoning is insufficient. I once called about a friends dog that went missing. They told me she wasn't there. I went down there and checked the cages that day and found her.

You have to go to the shelter---one hand has no idea what the other is doing, there

I think you are right, I emailed a volunteer but she hadn't seen the dog, and I called a few hours ago and it didn't fit a  of any dog they had, so I left a message with someone so that I can email the picture tomorrow, and if that fails I'll try to go in person.

Since they people on Next Door seemed to have an idea who owned the dog, someone on Vose, I'm hoping he was returned. But best to keep checking.

Just got confirmation, the pooch was picked up by its owner!

Whew! I was holding my breath... There wasn't anything I could do until at least Monday, and then I don't know what I would have done. I'm not home enough to take on a dog.

I am sooo glad to hear it!!!

Wonderful news! Relieved to hear this.
