Will senior citizens have the enhanced senior dose, or will the standard dose only be given?

And is this limited to Maplewood residents?

According to testimony at the most recent TC meeting, it will be the standard dose.

According to the flyer issued by the town, proof of Maplewood residency will be required.

Great price.... Remember you can get the shot, for you non residents, at Walgreens for $32 (normal) or $60 (high dose).

Absolutely positively cannot get the flu from the shot- and the life you protect won't just be your own. Lots of people can't get the shot at all for different reasons (babies, etc) and the flu can kill them.

Flu kills 36,000 people a year. That's 4,000 more than those killed in auto accidents, 2x as many as are murdered, and 1.5x as many as die from opioid deaths per year.

Take one for the team! Be a responsible adult! Protect our peeps!

The dose will be the standard dose, not the high dose. It will contain A/California, A/ Hong Long and B/Brisbane strains of flu vaccine.

If the town dates don't work, lots of pharmacies have them. I got mine at Target (CVS) today for $0.00 (no co-pay under my insurance.) They already had my insurance on file since we use them for our pharmacy. Very easy!

I read that getting the shot too early could cause it to wear off too soon. I believe they said the best time was between Halloween and Thanksgiving, or something like that. I will try to find the article later and link it.

If this is your only chance to get it, then it is better than not getting it. But if you are able to reliably get it a little later in the season you'll have more protection later on.

Recently everything I'm reading and hearing is pushing getting it now. I sure would like to know the truth about this (although I'm "done" now for this year for better or worse.)

I found the article, but I can't link from my phone. I forgot one important detail when I wrote the above post, waiting until after Halloween was for people 65 and older, for people younger than 65 an early shot doesn't result in as much of an issue.

Article I read in Consumer Reports recommended waiting until late September if one was over 65 or had a chronic health condition that could make them at greater risk should they contract the flu.

http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/deaths.htm

Number of deaths for leading causes of death:

Heart disease: 614,348
Cancer: 591,699
Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 147,101
Accidents (unintentional injuries): 136,053
Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 133,103
Alzheimer's disease: 93,541
Diabetes: 76,488
Influenza and Pneumonia: 55,227
Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome and nephrosis: 48,146
Intentional self-harm (suicide): 42,773

http://www.npr.org/2016/09/17/494360180/older-people-should-consider-waiting-a-bit-longer-to-get-flu-shot

Again, if this is your only chance to get the shot, or if you are certain you'll forget later, then get it now. Otherwise for most people this article recommends October, and for those over 65 they recommend after Halloween but before Thanksgiving.

As far as the timing of Flu shots, the Federal CDC recommends getting the flu shot as soon as vaccine for the coming flu season is available. So, September is not too early to get flu shots. It takes about two weeks for your body to make antibodies against the new flu strains. You may recall that H1N1 flu hit in June. So, while January is usually the prime time for flu outbreaks, they can occur at any time.

All of these contradictory recommendations seem to come from reputable sources ... discouraging!

But clearly it is better to get the vaccine than not, regardless of the timing.

Remember, it often takes government agencies years, if not longer, to update medical recommendations no matter how solid the research.

Does anyone know if/when South Orange will be doing a flu clinic? I don't see anything about it on the SO website. Thanks!

Very helpful! Thank you so much.

This would seem to be a good candidate for some "shared services" between the two towns. If they were coordinated, there could still be three sessions, open to residents of both towns, but not have two of them on the same date. And then it would work for more people in the towns and possibly save some money on the administration end.

If the rules were the same for all in both towns, this would be a good suggestion. They are not. Maplewood is providing free flu shots for Maplewood residents who are either age 65 and older or enrolled in Medicare or Medicaid. Proof of residence is required. Proof of age and/or current Medicare/Medicaid enrollment is required for the free flu shot (documentation depending on manner of qualification). South Orange is charging $20 for everyone.

The town location may be convenient for some, but everyone should know:

"Flu and other vaccines are required to be covered by your health insurance without charging a copayment or coinsurance. But, be sure to check with your insurance company to find out if you must go to a specific facility to receive the vaccine. Some insurance plans only cover vaccines given by your doctor or at a limited set of locations.

Learn more about preventive services covered by the Affordable Care Act.

But if you go to your PCP for a flu shot only, you may be charged a co-payment for an office visit, whether you expect it or not. On the other hand, if you have another reason to see the PCP you should not be charged extra for the shot.l

Just so you know, some PCPs haven't gotten their flu vaccine in yet. They recommend going to one of the drives or your local pharmacy. (I am sidestepping the issue of when the optimal time to get the shot is because I can't figure it out. I am getting mine at work, for free, next week.)

Clinic starts in one hour. I will be there helping with sign in. Please drop by, say hello, and get your flu shot if you need one.

Bump: Saturday Sept. 24. Flu shots today at Maplewood Town Hall 11:00am until 1:00pm.

Wish the school district would offer the flu shot clinics again for the employees . So convenient ! @emmie
