First coyote

After 23 years here, I just saw my first coyote slinking around the yard and then wandering off into the woods behind house. Mangy looking critter.

I saw my first coyote last week!  (But I'm in Morris County).  It was quite a moment.  Looked just like this guy:

I think they're usually harmless.  Unless you come across one carrying an anvil.

Or if they are near an ACME box.

That always backfires on the coyote.

ACME is the coyote's worst enemy, so if you see one of those boxes, stay away! I saw one in the back yard of our W. Orange house once, but it was a very sad-looking creature. Not healthy like the ones we get in New England rural areas.

Maplewood. Jennifer Lane/Prospect

I've seen them around Midland, Elmwood and cross-streets, once two different ones in the same evening.  Tough to make out from afar or at night, but an unmistakable build and lope when you get a good look.  Yet another reason why my cat stays indoors...

Leave food out for them if they are not gettiing enough.

I don't think that you want to encourage them to stick around. Besides, they probably get by with feral cats.

I'm not sure it's legal to feed them

I saw one today running across Walker road in WO  it was crossing in the area of the golf course and the reservation, so less surprising.  We have seen a fox up there too.
