File powder for gumbo - does anyone have any, or know where to get it? archived

I guess we could call this a "gumbo emergency" - but does anyone either have file powder or know where we can get some?

I've tried Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Kings and Pathmark - so I'm kind of out of options here.

Thanks!

Penzey's carries it and I think there's one in Summit now.

Two minutes - that's got to be some kind of Internet record!

They have it! They're in Summit! I know how to get to Summit! This is awesome and thank you very, very much.

What is it and why can't you make it?

Sasafrass powder (sp?). Not make-able, practically speaking.

My husband bought file powder from the Summit Penzey's in December. Plenty in stock. oh oh

I see that the Livingston Shoprite has it.

Recipe, please!

I went to Whole Foods, called Eden, Trader Joe's, Pathmark, Kings... no luck. When Bob posted about Penzey's I called them immediately and yes, they did have it in stock. I drove right over... very nice lady, HUGE store - but how the heck do they stay in business? I mean, I'm glad that they're there and all but - how much rent must they be paying, and how much spice can they be moving every month?

Their spices are amazing! All very fresh and some of the blends are wonderful. I especially like Fox Point, Brady Street, Roast Beef Rub, English Prime Rib Rub, Bouquet Garni, Bavarian...I could go on. Found out about them years and years ago - was thrilled when they opened in Summit (and then I promptly moved to Maine - back to mail order)

you can leave the file out and use okra which will thicken it as well.

Remember, file or ocra, never both.

I have plenty. If you still need it, PM me.

thanks VERY much - very kind of you - but we are all set and the gumbo turned out extremely well.

It's weird to have people on the east coast talking about Fox Point (a neighborhood in Milwaukee) and Brady Street--where i used to buy my lunch at Cousin's Subs when I was a teenager. But yes, Penzey's was always good.
