Favorite Christmas tunes

My favorite Christmas song is truly embarrassing. It is a song full of stereotypes and Western superiority, though the song was written with the best of intentions. As cringe worthy as the lyrics are, I loved it as a child (it was released when I was in middle school and they actually sold it as MMS) so when I hear it play on the radio this time of year the nostalgic part of me gets happy while the rational part of me winces at the words.

Fairytale of New York.  Hands down.

Silent Night.  A spare arrangement with some intimacy.  Not a  Mormon Tabernacle Choir type treatment.

I like Blind Boys of Alabama rendition of Go Tell It on the Mountain. I haven't heard the entirety of it yet but was impressed with Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings on Colbert last night singing Silent Night. A childhood favorite was John Jacob Niles singing I Wonder as I Wander.

Christmas Rapping by The Waitresses. If you can get past the bad 80's video it really is very cleverly written...

+ Fairytale. RIP Kirsty MacColl.

Although the Roches do We Three Kings pretty well.

And there's Aimee Mann.

And since it's still Hanukkah, how about Jeff Tweedy at one of Yo La Tengo's annual series.

Nothing is greater than Love.

But in my house, every Christmas also requires a little Faith.

Those Yo La Tengo shows were epic. ..nice call.

Random aside: just saw a rerun of Shelby Lynne on a Christmas-themed Live From Daryl's House that had some great stuff.

"Chestnuts Roasting," I'll Be Home for Christmas, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, that whole set of classics

Good King Wenceslas

Blue Christmas (this year for sure)

King's Singers, all the good ancient carols, esp. In Dulci Jubilo, I remember driving along, listening, singing, rewinding, singing again, mile after mile

Songs about how difficult life can be, but how Christmas and the year's end is a time to have hope for the next year.

Fairtytale of New York (this part always gets me):

"I could have been someone. But so could anyone. You took my dreams from me when I first saw you. I kept them with me babe. I kept them with my own. Can't make it all alone. I've built my dreams around you."

Christmas Wrapping (this part always gets me):

"Then suddenly we laughed and laughed. Caught on to what was happening. That Christmas magic's brought this tale to a very happy ending."

Thank God It's Christmas (this part):

"Oh my love we've lived in troubled days. Oh my friend we have the strangest ways. All my friends on this one day of days. Thank God it's Christmas. Yes it's Christmas. Thank God it's Christmas for one day."

+1   I started to tear up while singing along with that today.

Although I love the classics, this song from the movie Toys is a favorite.

"If I cannot bring you comfort, then at least I bring you hope."

favorite ever: In the Bleak Midwinter, any arrangement EXCEPT the Holst, which is banal in the extreme. But these days I tend toward medieval and Renaissance Christmas music, which is in a category all its own. I love the beauty and mystery.

Wings - Wonderful Christmastime. I know folks hate it, but I still LOVE IT.

Casting Crowns "Peace on Earth"

peace to all and  happy holidays.  May our world see more "peace on earth good will to men" in

    the coming new year...

My mistake!  It's actually called, "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day," and this version is sung by Casting Crowns.  Geez, I should know, my kid has sang with these guys twice now!
