Dumb question

I'm registereed as independent.  I''d like to vote in the primary.

What is required to vote in next week's primary?

Is it too late qualify?

Thanks.

It's a closed primary and unfortunately now too late to change your affiliation.  Deadline was April 16th.

Google tells me if you are affiliated with a political party, you can change your designation but it must be at least 55 days beforehand. If you are not affiliated with a political party, you can do so up to and including primary day.

Follow-up:

There is an Independent party; so we're registered as unaffiliated.  As such we can change party affiliation up to and including primary day.  (As ML noted above.  TY).  I assume that folks who did, in fact but mistakenly, register as independent (at least in their mind) would governed by that April 16 deadline.  Our registration was checked at town hall.

I changed to unaffiliated before the 55 day limit. I posted on a couple of the political threads that there was a deadline.

Yep, if you're "unaffiliated," declare a party at the polling place, vote, then file paperwork to change back to unaffiliated (55-day cutoff, prior to an election). Sucks that NJ has no online voter registration, so will need to send a form to Essex County clerk, I believe.

FWIW- just went to town to vote.  They didn't ask for the form.  They asked for new affiliation and I just had to sign as we do when voting. .  Done.

Thank you for voting in the Democratic NJ primary. It's important.

I assume it's the same process to become unaffiliated?

My son's process, when he was at home here, before he married and moved out.

1.  Register as unaffiliated.

2. Go to vote at the Municipal Building, declaring the primary he was voting in.

3.  Proceed to the clerk's office, to ask for a form to change his registration, which he did, back to "unaffiliated".

Anyone can do the same thing, although it would be hard to match my son's record for the shortest time between being "unaffiliated" and a voter in the primary and back again.   smile

The form can also be downloaded and mailed in

If one feels strongly enough to vote in a party's primary, why would you then not want to be affiliated with said party?

Because I'm not so dogmatic that I associate with one party.

Because it's the candidate NOT the party I'm interested in.

Because I haven't feltt strongly enough about a candidate until now.  Until recently it's been like choosing between a sleaze bag covered in yellow slime rather than one covered in green slime.  They're professional party HACKS

Bernie is different enough to move me to vote FOR him rather settling for the lesser of the aforementioned sleazes.
