Du Pont: Their worst nightmare

Anyone read the article in the NYT Magazine, The Lawyer Who Became DuPont's Worst Nightmare?  So frightening.  I hope it leads to a tipping point where the public and politicians demand transparency above all else.

side bar shows New Jersey has having big issues with PFOA too.   where the, ahem, market, fixes for these corporate criminals?

Im glad I don't use any teflon pans.  Everyone should stop using teflon.  Nasty nasty stuff.

That article was truly compelling...what made the case intriguing for those who didn't read it, was that the law firm who backed their attorney's work usually represents the corporations.  I would say the guy lucked out except that it sounds like he and many in that area are now suffering from wretched illnesses most likely due to the pollutants that DuPont knowingly dumped.

It's not "likely" due to the pollutants.  It IS due to the pollutants.  That is what was proved.

I said most likely because I couldn't recall that they could legally prove that their illnesses (I vaguely recall they might not all have been cancer) could be said to be caused by the the product. To me corporate damage like this is despicable and immoral. But the world of law takes a different point of view.

According to the article, it was proved that the PFOA was causing damage and that there was a coverup by Dupont.  There was a class action suit that succeded.  The individuals of the class suit may now bring their individual cases to court (altho, they had to wait 7 years of further scientific study), but because of some funkiness (I forget the legal term) the court will only take 4 cases a year.  There are still 3533 cases left.  That puts us at year 2899!

I had a scratched-up teflon frying pan for years, and used it to make food for my family. I can't read the article, too scary. Between this, and warming plastic baby bottles in the microwave, fingers are crossed.

lisat, I hear you. Me too. I cooked on scratched teflon also. and did the baby bottles in microwave. I surprised myself that I could read the article. I often skip articles that would be upsetting. I have enough stress in my life for many times over.  The story was compelling to me because the focus was mostly the attorney who represented this one guy. He was somebody who probably never given a lot of thought about how these corporations affect an individual's life. In fact he was normally representing the corporations. He had spent summers near where the dump was, so it became personal for him. So he went after the case with a vengeance. That was the part that was gratifying to me.

well as Mr. Rogers says, when there is trouble, look for the helpers.
