Drinks near Penn Station?

Meeting friends Monday night -- looking for elegant drinks spot near Penn. impossible dream?

the vine at eventi hotel or l'amico restaurant  on 6th avenue and 30th

Tricky because there's a Rangers game Monday night at 7, which brings hordes. I like The Harold but the bar is small, and Keens but it's not great for conversation when there is an event at the Garden. Pennsylvania 6, Tir Na Nog and Seven are OK, too. If you're in the mood for a gigantic beer menu, The Ginger Man.

Or head to The Red Cat or elsewhere in Chelsea, maybe Wine Disciples Enoteca, which I discovered  the night that Yes was at the Garden and Seven was full of . . . Yes fans. (It's connected to a wine shop next door and they have a weird wine menu with steep prices for 3-/6-ounce glasses, NOT glass/bottle, so caveat emptor, but the wine was good.)

To stay close to Penn, I think I'd plan for drinks at Penn6 sometime after 7.

A new one I can't vouch for but sounds like fun and has great views: The Skylark on 39th.

Civilized (haven't spent enough time in the bar to decide if its elegant) and far enough away from Penn not to attract random Rangers fans - Casa Nonna on 38th.

There's a new whiskey place on 30th btw 7th & 8th. Not exactly "elegant" but more upscale than the others and it's got a trendy vibe.

Try Lybane at 44th and 8th, northwest corner.  The only place in the neighborhood that knows what a kir is.  On the quiet side.  Plus good Lebanese (obviously) snacks with the drinks.  Sometimes there's live music but you can sit away from it.

Go here: http://www.juniperbarnyc.com/

It's two blocks away, has a nice happy hour, food is fantastic and the place is lovely. I can't recommend it enough.

j_r mentioned Tir Na Nog, which was a good place. But as an FYI, it closed (permanently) a couple months ago. Maybe three.

oovina at 37th and 9th.  Tapas and drinks

If you're a craft beer fan, District Tap House has a pretty impressive list of drafts and bottles. It's on the south side of 38th Street between 7th and 8th Avenues, across from the Post Office.

Keene's Steakhouse  http://www.keens.com/

Little bit of a walk, but Hotel Americano has a cool vibe, on 27th at 10th.

Enjoyed Tir Na Nog's atmosphere, so I was sad to see it shuttered.  However, it's just for renovations -- they're reopening in June.  There's another outpost at 39th, between 8th and 9th Aves.  http://www.tirnanognyc.com/#_=_  More of a pub feel, though -- don't think it qualifies as elegant.

Didn't know about TNN renovations, thanks. The uptown version is vast and extremely loud after about 6. You can do better, closer.

O'Cabanon is a wine bar/restaurant. Lovely cheese and charcuterie a the bar. 29th St. close to 8th Ave. http://www.ocabanon.com

Ah, well, that's good news. Somebody there needs to tell Google, then. When you search for it, it says "permanently closed."

Lots of Korean places on 32nd St are nice.

The Nomad hotel has a bar called The Library that is a favorite of mine in the area at Broadway and 28th St.  The hotel is designed by Jacques Garcia, world renowned for his hotel and restaurant spaces.  Definitely elegant.

I LOVE this place and it definitely fits the bill for elegant drinks.   A place I haven't been but would take the opportunity because it looks great is American Whiskey near MSG.   http://www.americanwhiskeynyc.com/

Wine Library + some small brown paper bags.

We went to Juniper Bar and loved it. Of course, that might be the $6 Rosemary-infused gin and tonics talking. Ask to sit in the back -- front is noisy. Gorgeous space. Awesome pick, @ridski!

Trattoria Bianca at 8th Avenue and 35th Street...

$6??   Did you mean $16?

Nope! $6 Cabernet, Sauvignon Blanc, Prosecco, Ithaca Flower Power IPA and house special Juniper G&T's during their 4PM to 8PM happy hour. There's a reason why I chose this place!
