Donations Galore

My aunt passed away and she traveled. A LOT. We have a ton of suitcases and carry one. We can try the local good will but I recall someone asking a few years back about luggage for families in shelters. Do you know who this was, or do you know a worthy place we can drop off luggage at?

You could ask IHN -- they are located in Montclair, but may have hosting congregations closer by who would also be willing to take luggage. Since the homeless families they serve move between hosting congregations every week or two, luggage can be very helpful. (but no guarantees that it is a current need)

Thank you, I will ask.

The luggage is in Suffern but we are willing to bring it down with us if we can find someone who could use it

IHN is part of a nationwide network of similar programs (I believe it was the second county organization formed). Most are now renamed "Family Promise". There doesn't seem to be one in Rockland County, so the closest to Suffern seems to be Family Promise of Bergen County, in Ridgewood.

i remember reading that foster kids need luggage. They often go from foster home to foster home carrying all their stuff in garbage bags. Maybe contact DYFS.

It doesn't have to be up in NY, we will happily bring it back to Maplewood so long as we have a place for it to go. We just don't want to risk having multiple suitcases end up in the attic forever so we don't want to drive it down until we know for certain that we have someone to take it.

There is a "DYFS" office on Burnett in the same building as the NJ Fencing Academy. They will gladly take luggage for the kids. SO much better than the standard black trash bags that get used! Thanks for donating rather than dumping

What a great idea. We have some good luggage that we do not use. Thanks all.

I called a family member and she will be calling DYFS to see if luggage is accepted and she will also deliver the suitcases.

Today three bags of towels, four new unopened bottles of laundry detergent, and one package of under bed pads (like wee-wee pads but without the scent to attract dogs) were delivered to People For Animals in Hillside. Fittingly enough many of the towels had dog themes on them. Some were promotional gifts from Iams, Pro Plan, etc. One had been embroidered with "Sit. Stay. Good dog."

I've lost count of how many bags were delivered to GoodWill these past two days. I know it was around 5 bags of shoes (many never even worn once!) a couple bags of decorative pillows, and over forty bags of clothing, including silks, cashmere, and leather.

It's hard work sorting through everything, but it is for a good cause and keeping stuff out of a landfill makes it worthwhile.

Thank you. Unfortunately, everything is located in Suffern NY. My husband has delivered about three carloads of clothing to the GoodWill located up there so far.

you can always just look up the local hotline number and ask
