Donate Blood Two Dates

On Saturday July 4th from 10:00 am till 2:00 pm the Community Blood Services mobile van will be parked at Memorial Park during the 4th of July programs. Walk-ins welcome. There is something patriotic about donating blood to help your fellow citizens and this is a good way to help celebrate the 4th.

On Tuesday August 25th from 2:30 pm until 7:30 pm the American Red Cross will hold a blood donation drive at The Woodland, 60 Woodland Road.

Contact the Maplewood Health Dept. for more info. 973-762-8120 x4400.

Bump for Saturday July 4th. Hope you will find time to donate. It is a lifesaving act.

Bump. I am constantly surprised when I hear how many people need blood and blood products for many types of illness. By donating you are helping people who you may never know, but the gift is lifesaving.

New policies:

If you are over 75 years of age, you will need a doctor's note indicating that you are healthy enough to donate blood. Otherwise, you will be turned away.

Weight restriction has been lowered. You can now donate blood if you weigh 110 lbs or more.

Reminder: Eat a meal before donating. Make sure you are hydrated.

DON'T FORGET: If you're male and had sex with a guy any time since 1977, you can't donate blood.

That little restriction is hidden away in the HIV/AIDS section: http://www.redcrossblood.org/donating-blood/eligibility-requirements/eligibility-criteria-topic

This too will change. I was a regular donor for years.

In the meantime, I urge those who are allowed, to give blood - truly a life giving act.

FDA Recommends Lifting Lifetime Ban On Gay Men Donating Blood

...ending the lifetime ban on gay and bisexual men donating blood, although sexually active gay men will still face hurdles as donors.

In case you don't know, donating blood doesn't hurt. Also, you can't get a disease from it.
