custom beadboard?

hi,

i need to replace a small amount of water-damaged beadboard in my ceiling. since it's old (could be circa 1900), i haven't been able to find anything off-the-shelf yet that matches the dimensions and the grooves.

anyone know of a carpenter or place that make beadboard (affordably hopefully)? i probably only need about 3 linear feet (by ~48" length).

thanks!

I had that problem in a remodel of my 1st Maplewood house. (1921)

Affordable was not possible.

I was not able to find any place that sold the stock and I went out to PA and NY looking.

I looked into purchasing a router bit so that I could cut it. Wow, is that expensive.

I ended up using 4 different stocks that I could purchase. I cut them and glued the parts together and I used a router to make an adjustment to match the bead that I needed in the room. Because it was off just a bit I could still see the difference, so I removed the entire room and replaced the trim. It looked great, you could not see the difference from one room to another.

And I had replacement stock of the original for the rest of my restoration project!

Good luck,

Da,

i had a feeling it might be rather complicated. the beadboard covers our foyer and living room ceilings, and a few of the foyer boards are damaged.

the living room ceiling is divided by beams into 9 beadboard "panels" (it's basically 2 side-by-side 3x3 squares of beadboard if that makes sense).

so i guess i have 2 decent options: 1) i could replace the whole foyer (and maybe the living room since it won't match) or 2) i could remove the beadboard from the 2 center panels in the living room, replace that with a different design completely, then use the salvaged wood to replace the damage in the foyer

thanks george!

Have you checked Azek beadboard for size match?

too wide unfortunately. probably not a bad idea if i end up doing the whole room(s). if i could replace just the damaged section with custom widths, i suspect it would clash too much with the existing real wood.

Does anything on this site work? http://www.vintagewoodworks.com/beadboard.html

There is an off chance you might find something in a salvage yard. The one I am familiar with is in Barnegat, we got some things there to replace original pieces damaged at our home. I recall they had trim, not sure on bead board. http://www.recyclingthepast.com

You might also try one of the smaller lumber stores like Jaeger. I think there is another in orange and also Madison. They may carry a wider variety than the big box stores.

You could try Dykes.

I've been told they still have many old cutting patterns and can make knife sets to replicate orginal moulding. If you have a loose piece they may be able to match you up with something.

Have you asked at 2GFN (the store by Parker & Valley)? They have a lot of architectural and decorative elements salvaged from local houses - the hours are irregular, but if you can get through to the owner, he might have something or know of some way to find what you are looking for.

Phone number is (201) 787-6487 and I see they have a FB page under 2GFN with some pictures. That might also be a way to ask your question.
