Cryptomeria vs. Emerld Arborvitae archived

Planning on putting in a privacy hedge/living fence to separate deck/driveways.

We need 8-10' because our deck is about 4' off the ground.

I know cryptomeria tend to grow wider. But any other considerations?

Leyland cypress, green giant arborvitae

Do not put in Lelands. They just grow to be so enormous unless you plan on really giving them a hedge cut every year. The 'Green Giant' arborvitae are very nice. They can be hedged to maintain size much more easily than Lelands and way prettier to boot.

And I love cryptomeria. They too can be hedged if needed. They make great cuttings with their cute little round cones for xmas decorations if you are in to that.

Oh, you asked about Emeralds. They grow fairly slowly - just make sure you top them a bit so that will encourage growth on the sides. After a few years - maybe 5 or so, if you haven't given them a haircut, they can easily get top heavy and fall down especially during big snow and look very sloppy.

Cryptomeria are much more attractive IMO, but aren't as dense, in case that's a consideration. Presume you have shade?

What about the Rocky Mountain Juniper?

first is cryptomeria 'hedge' and second is a close up. I love these little cones. It's a great cutting for xmas wreath or garland or any winter green arrangement.

James -- Whenever you shop for trees or shrubs, don't fall in love with them until you've read their tags carefully. Make sure the tag says its' ultimate height won't exceed 10' and note its' ultimate width, as well. If you're shopping in a nursery, ask a knowledgable staff member for help. Have him or her double-check the tag's information to be sure it's correct. And if deer resistance is important, check Rutger's University's online list of deer resistant plant material before buying. Good luck with this project. It sounds like fun. I hope you'll enjoy your new living fence for many years to come. oh oh

Hmmm. Never seen the hedge type, only those that are shaped like Norfolk Pines, but denser.
