Covenant House Prom!

Take the Cake of SOMA is partnering with Covenant House NJ to host an unforgettable PROM NIGHT for the Covenant House kids in Newark. Covenant House is the largest privately funded charity in the Americas providing loving care and vital services to homeless, abandoned, abused, trafficked, and exploited youth. Many of these young people have missed important life milestones and celebrations, like the high school prom. As K.T., a 20-year-old Covenant House resident, who is helping us plan this special night said, We all deserve a chance to be young and have fun, even though life dealt us a bad hand.”

In order to make this a glamorous night for these amazing kids, we need your help.  It’ll take a lot of sparkly dresses, flowers, tuxes - and more! - to make these prom dreams come true. A few ways you can help:

1. Make a monetary donation at www.gofundme/covenanthouseprom. No donation is too small or too big!

2. Help connect us with some providers of the GOODS AND SERVICES we need (listed in the attached flyer).

3. Help RAISE FUNDS (host bakesales, fundraising parties, car washes, etc.).

4. Organize a PROM DRESS DRIVE! (contact us for more info!)

We hope you can find it in your heart to contribute.  After all, doesn’t every kid deserve a prom?

Hi, Janine, I need a pickup.  The box is full.  Some one just called from New York to get our address.  They want to mail some dresses.

George

Network news coverage included mention of George's store as the drop off point.  That may explain the inquiries from NYC.

Thanks, George, for being a drop-off point! We'll come to empty the box today!

I think you ladies took 20 to 25 dress out with that pickup, along with shoes, bags and even a hair curler set.  I was sorry to see the yellow chiffon dress go.  I think it would have looked nice on me.

I used to volunteer at Covenant House in the 90's. It's truly a remarkable place that provides older teens who were often pushed away by own families and safe place to call home.

I have a few dresses to donate and I will try to collect some dresses from friends.

@JanineTerrito Is there anything else you might need for the prom? Anyway I can offer help in the way of volunteer hours?

@janine Territo

Monday, I need another pickup.  Deliveries keep arriving.  Two ladies drove over from their Thrift Store in Nutley, as well as many local folk.

Currently at the top of the box again.

@jgberkeley : That is fabulous new! It's a LOVE BOMBING in So orange/Maplewood for Covenant House! (And a great way to clear out a closet of formal wear)!

I heard shoes are still needed as well as accessories.

If anyone needs help getting dresses etc to George, or if janine needs help picking up and delivering the goods, please send me a PM and I will be happy to help. Let's keep this going!

Anyone donate goodie bag items yet? Or the bags and ribbons to tie them? I will pick up and deliver for that also, if needed.

I have shoes and purses!  Will drop them off tomorrow...

Thanks again, George!! Maybe we'll save the yellow chiffon for you -- you've earned it!

Hahaha, thanks for asking! Some other ways to help...

-We're looking for fun giveaways from local businesses/individuals for a "swag bag" (soaps, sweets/treats, gift cards, lotions, accessories, etc.- things 18-21 year olds would like) - we'll need about 80 of each item.

-We'd also love to get t-shirts made for the kids w/ the name and date of the prom as a memento. If you know anyone who does that kind of work, please spread the word!

-We're looking pretty good for dresses, but we could use more fancy shoes and costume jewelry.

-And - definitely not as fun! - but we're still looking for monetary donations as we have many rentals/services to pay for... www.gofundme.com/covenanthouseprom

Janine,

Three boxes of dresses and shoes arrived today from a New York address.  You have lots of dresses here folded and stacked on the floor.

I also have a Ca$$h donation envelope a customer gave me in support of the event.  I have it in my safe as it is Ca$$h and I want to keep an eye on it.

Can you send some one over again?  On the floor, my waist high until they slide off.
