Contractor needed for basement "face lift"

I would like to hire a general contractor for a simple basement renovation.

No new walls, no sheetrock, no carpeting.  I will need them to, repair a dropped ceiling, paint walls , paint a concrete floor, install a countertop with a sink and one or two electrical outlets.

Suggestions of talented (and organized) individuals?

Im interested in this one too -- especially the painting walls and concrete floor part -- mine are terrrrrrrible..

KMK, we just had John Williams at Honey2DoList  repair the powder room in our basement (the toilet had been leaking, so the floor was entirely rotten). He replaced the floor, patched the drywall, and painted. Did a great job. (We already had our plumber lined up to replace the toilet and a sink, but I think John can do the countertop you describe) http://honey2dolistllc.com/

We've used John Sileo over the years (and just last week!) to install new outlets and switches/repair and replace old ones. 973-761-1590

Definitely call Mark Persaud of M. Persaud Home Improvements 973-698-1447.  He renovated my basement twice -- after it flooded (sewer backup) after Hurricane Irene, and again before I listed my house for sale.  He painted the floor and walls and fixed the ceiling.  The potential and eventual buyers actually mentioned how much they appreciated such a clean and neat looking basement, which usually look like dungeons.

If you want more work done than that, ask him to show you the pictures of his own basement that he totally renovated -- bathroom, kitchen, rec room, etc.

give John Clayton a call (advertiser).  He's a good guy, works hard, good crew.  Work excellent, takes pride in his work.

What do folks usually charge for this type of work? as it is not a full build up of basement, I'm assuming it would be somewhat reasonable ?

My basement work (both times) was part of a bigger package, so I don't know what that part cost.  But it all depends on the size and what you want done.  For instance, the first time I had the walls waterproofed in addition to being cleaned and painted.

Mark may charge a little more than others, but his work is impeccable; his crew is all family and they're very clean and trustworthy.  I can't help but feel that the work he did in my basement played a part in my house selling very fast and above asking price (people don't usually rave about a basement, as opposed to kitchens/baths, etc.), so whatever the cost, it paid for itself.  Good luck!

John Clayton did our basement too -- we didn't want it finished, just cleaned up and no longer scary! Great job, reasonable, and I love the practical space for projects, storage, laundry, etc.

Why not mention the contractor as a caveat emptor?  We should be more transparent with this situations..... share information and share knowledge.

I just did this and used Homeowners Hub, a local business that vettes contractors and provides them to you.   I was very happy.

Opinion needed.

We have open risers on the basement stairs.  (The stair is against a wall on one side and has an open railing on the other side.) They are very simply designed and the staircase is not very noticeable in the space because sunlight shines through the steps.  We casually store things under the stairs but they remain in full view.

Do other homeowners just hate open risers?

I do. But I don't know that in a basement where they were not on display it would bother me that much.
