Chevy Cruze vs, Nissan Altima SE archived

Aug 26, 2013 at 11:17pm
Considering buying either a 2013 Chevy Cruze, or a low mileage 2011 Nissan Altima SE with similar amenities. Chevy Cruze has top safety ratings, sporting 10 air bags (vs. Altima's six) and top crash test results. Nissan Altima has very good safety ratings, but is a bigger car over all (mid size sedan vs. Chevy Cruze) small sedan.)

I am wondering if anyone has had experience with either car, and if the bigger size on the Altima means enough to make them more apples for apples on the safety front. Any thoughts or experiences would be great. Thanks.
I've got a 2013 Cruze and like it a lot. We didn't get to test the Altima, but I like the look of it a lot. One thing about the Cruze is that it's a solid-feeling car, but almost all newer cars is riddled with large blind spots. I just had to suck it up and deal with that. Mine has a rear-view camera which is great, unless the sun is behind you, or you're in a parking lot surrounded by SUVs.

Thanks. What dealership did you use for the Cruze?

Checkout Wigder Chevrolet in Livingston, NJ. That's where we got our chevy and ask for Jim O'Day. He got us a great deal on our car. Just make sure you research the manufacturers price and so on with any dealership you go to.

I am finding there is almost to much info online about all of the various aspects of car buying - it can be overwhelming. Finding True Car really helpful with new car pricing.

I have a 2007 Altima and the transmission, I forget the name of this particular kind they are using , but it's bad. They've had tons of problems. Its called something like an atv trans? Unless they changed it for 2011 but I don't think so. Mine had to be replaced twice already.

The Altima has a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). According to this article, it was revised for the 2011 Maxima and Altima models.

BTW, I love my 1996 Maxima so much that when it was totaled, I insisted that they fix it. Should be good for 200,000 miles, but if it craps out, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a used Altima.

Still needs to stand the test of time though. They improved it, but like he said about the CVT trans, it's like saying "you have herpes, the best KIND of vd"

My Prius has a CVT, as do most hybrids. I have not had any trouble with it.

Hubby has a 2012 Cruze and likes it a lot. No problems there either.

My friend has a Cruze. It's a great car, but we find the front bucket seats to be uncomfortable as all get out

I don't own an Altima but I rent them frequently. I am not a fan of the overboosting Nissan does to the brakes- I prefer a more linear feel. The first few stops after I roll out of the Hertz lot at LAX are always very abrupt.

Interesting, I love the seats. My in laws have a Honda Accord, maybe 2005? And that thing's the most uncomfortable thing I've ever been in.

Hybrid and conventional car CVTs are totally different technology, FYI. That said, I have a new Subaru with CVT, but Subaru has been making continuously variable transmissions for decades in Japan.

I wouldn't sweat the CVT though. Big difference is they're not repairable, but as more get on the road, the junkyard supply will increase and so will remanufacturing.

I've had an Altima for 11 years and 155,000+ miles. Love it ... Interestingly enough, as I start thinking about what's next, the Cruze has caught my eye ... Reviews are favorable and it seems as if it's a good value ... I seem to recall reading that the suspension was designed b the Corvette team ...

I rented the Cruze for 4 days this past weekend. I liked the solid feel of the car, but didn't like its automatic transmission and limited trunk space, and hated the fact that I couldn't see the speedometer needle on the highway because the steering wheel was blocking my view from my ideal driver seat position (and steering wheel position). The last detail may not be an issue for you but I couldn't live with it.

See I would defintely sweat it, as these are $3600 replacements. Mine were covered by warranty because I bought my car new, but yours may not be.

We're talking THREE transmissions in 7 years Guys. Its an issue. My mechanic said these transmissions are junk.

When I drove friends car I had same problem! It made me nuts.

I would suggest seeing if you can rent the Cruz for a week

Full disclosure ... My Altima is a manual transmission. Real men drive five-speeds!!

Yeah, the Nissan CVT is known for being lousy. Gotta do your research on your specific car still - lots of forum posts on Nissan Rogue issues in particular. I felt fine getting a Subaru with a CVT since it uses a steel belt and Subaru kei cars have used CVTs forever. My point though is that 10 years from now junkyards will be full of CVT cars (especially the way 2013 Subarus are selling!) and CVT replacement prices will come down.
