Can anyone explain to me the difference between Chatham Township verses Chatham Borough? I know there are geographical differences but are there differences in taxes? What about differences in "personality" between the two?
Chatham Borough has the train station and permit parking for residents
Chatham Township residents are limited to metered parking at the train station, which I hear is filled very very early, so Check spelling
In reallity - Chatham Township residents can not park at the Chatham Train Station, most drive to Summit at park in the NJTransit garage.
Chatham Borough has a housing stock a bit more like Maplewood. The Township is further out, with larger lots, homes of a more recent vintage, 50s, 60s 70s etc, and a lot more new construction.
The Township also has a very large, ( and very attractive) condominium complex - which is collectively known as Chatham Glen and has four separate communities within it.
Many parts of the Boro are walk to train - the township is not, They share a school system that is very highly rated. Prices in both the township and borough are generally higher than Maplewood and S. Orange and lower than Millburn/Short Hills.
I grew up in Chatham Borough. The Chathams are a different world than Maplewood. Personality-wise, the borough might be a little more down-to-earth. Things may have changed since I graduated in the early 90's, but my experience of the Chathams can be summed up by a very loud and heated 'discussion' in a high school history class where the teacher was trying to make the point that we lived in a middle class community, and the majority of the students were outraged at the suggestion . . . "we're UPPER middle-class." Frankly, I'm still rolling my eyes.
