Cape Cod

Hello - vacationing in Cape Cod for the first time this summer and trying to figure out our plan for driving up on a Saturday. We hear horror stories about 95 and the bridge. For anyone who has gone there regularly in the summer, what time would you leave on a Saturday (very early? or go later in afternoon?) and do you take a route to avoid 95? any advice appreciated.

There are actually two bridges: the infamous Bourne and the Sagamore. Your phones GPS will tell u which is the less congested. Leave very early. Saturday is not good in any case because u will run into vacationers plus people from the mainland just heading to the cape for the day.

I go every year, but never drive up on a Saturday.  With no traffic it's a good 5 hours to the other side of the Bourne bridge from here, but on a Saturday morning, 95 will be bad from the GW all the way through Westport and maybe further.  Expect 3 or 4 hours just to get past New Haven, where traffic tends to ease up.  Better plan, leave late Friday night - after 9:00 or 10:00.  Drive as far as Groton, CT, where you can get a very cheap motel room for the night.  Then you will have about a 2 hour drive from there early Saturday morning to the Bourne Bridge.  Avoiding 95 on either the Merritt or 684/84 won't be any faster.

Take 84 to 90 to 495.  Its longer in miles but, on a Saturday, it will be shorter and you will be hating it less.

Life is too short to spend half of it sitting on 95.

Yeah, but 95 has newly renovated rest stop areas and they even have McDonalds in them.

Nobody takes 87 to 90 to 495?

so what's the best route. I'm heading up to Hyannis on a Saturday?

Leave as early as possible. Go 95. Listen to traffic reports. Use Merritt Pkwy if reported better. Plan on 1-2 hours of extra travel time. Good luck!

If and when u take 95 and make that right turn in Providence, be psychologically prepared for the fact that you are not "almost there". Even tho Hyannis is one of the first cape cod towns it's still a long trip out there.

GWB or TPZ bridge to the Merritt instead of 95. Pick up 95 after New Haven then 95 to 195 to 25 https://www.google.com/maps/di...

Have been going this way on a Sat in the Summer for over a decade. Leave early and hit the bridges before 3pm. You will always have traffic on the Mid Cape.

If coming back on a Sat - leave very early, before 9am, or it will take 3 hours to get off the cape.

Have been driving from our area to The Cape for 45 years (well personally only been driving it 35 years). We do 95 or the Merritt if we leave by 5.  But we take 84 to 90 to 495 if we leave after 7.

The earlier the better - and then you can have chowdah for lunch!
