Can you spray stain on fencing? archived

Painting a fence is a daunting task. Does anyone have experience using a sprayer? There must be a reason that professionals don't spray...I'm guessing.
I wouldn't...

Hey, musicme, have you seen how much fun it is to whitewash a fence?

Spraying paint should be done in an area where you can contain the overspray, otherwise you'll be painting your house and car...the neighbors' too.

It's only worth it if you have a lot of fence. Throw a tarp over the backside of he fence. It cuts down on the time by quite a bit but you will use double the stain.

a lot of professionals dont spray because of the prep work and the clean up after, plus brushing it on gives you a better finish

I've seen wood preservative applied to split rail fences with the kind of sprayer you might use for a garden. But I cant imagine using a spray gun- unless it's something like a wood plank or basket weave fence - the overspray would be incredible

We stained our fence with a paint sprayer (cheap one) which did not have a lot of overspray. It was way faster since my hand it just took too long. We did kill the grass under the fence though. So you do need to cover it if you want to ensure it does not die.

Jeff, I have an HVLP sprayer you can borrow. Its best for water based product. I'm planning on using it to paint someones fence if they ever pick a color!! ;-)
