Can anybody recommend a beach (not to far from south orange/ maplewood) where I can let the pup run off leash?

Legally, no place exists where you can let your dog run of leash except for fenced in dog runs. You can bring your dog to liberty state park and the bay side of Sandy hook allows dogs.

The northernmost part of Asbury Park is full of dogs early in the morning. Most Nj beaches, however have ordinances that prohibit dogs from May 1- October 1, although many people ignore these details and believe its Memorial thru Labor Days.
