cabinet refacing archived

There was one thread on refacing kitchen cabinets but ir really only suggested avoiding sears. Has anyone been happy with their cabinet refacing? Who did it?
Full disclosure---I'm a designer at Kitchen Expo. We sell kitchen cabinets---no refacing.
We moved into our home almost a year ago. My wife hates the cabinets, but instead of redoing the entire kitchen now (moving walls and windows), we opted to investigate refacing. We got two quotes; one from Kitchen Magic and the other from Sears. Both quotes were for MDF (medium density fiberboard) doors; not wood, which we would have prefered. (Wood would have been pricier and I don't think Sears even offers it.) Compared to the price that I would charge for wood doors in a mid-level cabinet, a wider choice of doorstyles, plus installation, the prices for refacing and complete new cabinets are comparable.
So, I suggest getting both a quote for refacing *and* new cabinets.

xnyr is correct, refacing, unless you do it yourself, which if you are handy, is quite possible, isn't by itself much cheaper than all new cabinets.

but by refacing -- you won't necessarily need to have new counters, new backsplash, and a new floor if you reface -- you will probably need all of these if you get new cabinets.

/p

I think most people who are considering refacing also intend to change counters, but pete is correct, it's probably not necessary. There is no reason to change the floor with new cabinets if the floor's in good condition--many of my client's don't.

We had our kitchen refaced just under 5 yrs. ago and were very happy with the outcome. We had gotten a few estimates and there was a large price discrepancy between Kitchen Magic and the guys we used. We also had Home Remodelers quote a price (I think they're subcontracted by Sears) who were in line with Kitchen Magic on materials and price. We did not use either (Kit. Magic or Sears). The guy who did most of our work has since opened his own business and I would suggest giving him a call. Our kitchen had good solid cabinets and layout so we really weren't looking for a total overhaul. We simply wanted a "facelift", which we got. We also had new counters installed. Please whisper me if you need more info.
