Bye-bye, Blimpie's! archived

Anybody notice that what was the Blimpie Base on Valley is now empty???
what number Blimpie's was it? I used to live around the block from the original in Hoboken...Blimpie Base 1.

I wonder if its going to up for sale anytime soon. South Orange keeps talking about revitalizing the business district in and around the village. I am thinking of trying to open something that will succeed. A check cashing store, a pawn shop , an adult book magazine and "toy" store , or Off track Betting.

why would you think those things would succeed? I don't think S.O. is so down in the dumps to justify those stores. Plus I'd imagine there are laws on the books preventing such places (well - the adult store and/or betting store at least)

jesus christmas. I was joking. Dear god. Most of those businesses require parking too. Its like how I say if I ever win hundreds of millions of dollars I'm going to buy a large home in short hills and put 4 or 5 camaros on the front lawn in various stages of disrepair, then 2 refrigerators on the front porch.

I can put a refrigerator on my porch??!! Now THAT solves several problems for me... thanks Freeway!!

Very welcome I want 2 , acutally ms. freeway wants to for "beer and more beer"

The adult video store on SA was quite profitable, before the area was traded to the LDS for a tax-exemption to be dragging on the Maplewood economy later.

OTB costs too much; make it a straight numbers joint, which has a better payout anyway.

Hahah nice. Yeah I do recall the adult place making decent money for a little while. I think zoning would be tricky since blimpie buts up to a residential area. Yeah otb would cost alot, numbers however is cool. I like check cashing though ,You can sell money orders and wire transfers also. I could make it a notary and charge $12 a page. There is a constant stream of cash especially since its close to other retailers and mass transit.

The Blimpie Base did a big lunch business with kids from CHS. They had a cork board with pictures of various grads, including the Schues if I remember correctly. I imagine their francishise period ran out and couldn't be renewed. For years the store had a new sign in the corner of the dining area that SO wouldn't let them put up because of code issues. LOL

Klh, MW opposed the LDS church. Under a 1990s law their is no legal way they could have prohibited.

Too bad, I used to be one of those high school kids back in the 80's. Not that Blimpies is fine dining but I always felt the sandwiches from the S Orange location were much better than the ones you could get from the Blimpie on SA ave. The bread always tasted better there. Of well I hope they put something good in there. Columbia could use a deli where kids can afford to eat in (unlike the overpriced one by the park).

Our family will miss it! Definitely better sandwiches than the SA Blimpie.

Another Blimpies fan here. And thanks to Bobk, the mystery about the sign has now been solved. It was kind of cool getting to see one of those in the orignal crate but I always wondered if they were just too lazy to put it up.

Not great food, but I was always happy with a Turkey piled high with hot peppers and the kids' meal was a real value: small sandwich, drink, chips and cookie for about three bucks.

The people that worked there were always so nice too, not like the swinging teen party house that is Pizza Hut. I wish that place had gone under instead of Blimmpies.

I got to know the owner because I'd eat there with my kids, maybe, twice a month. All the staff was always friendly, and their Rueben sandwich always hit the spot for me.

He said the lot was just too big for that type of business -- to pay that rent along with the rising franchise fees, etc.

I will miss them,, but I guess we can count on that space NOT being replaced by another Blimpie's.

Too bad! My son (CHS '00) was also a photo-on-the-wall regular. So regular in his ordering that when Linda saw him coming across the parking lot, she would put in his order (12-inch turkey-and-provolone as an after-school snack--God bless 15-year-old boys and their metabolisms!) and by the time he came in the door his sandwich was ready and waiting for him.

I will miss Blimpies too! We used to call ahead for sandwiches and they always got the order right. I liked their bread too.

:cry:My faves: (A) Large BB (Blimpy Best), w/lettuce, tomato, sweet peppers, & O&V only on the bread, or

(2) Large Tuna, same dressings

Of course now, since I detest Subway, I'll have to go to The Great Wazu (off Rte 10 in E. Hanover) or Town Hall Deli to get my Sub Fix...

Kathy, same with Dan. She'd see him and a Blimpie Best/no cheese would be awaiting. I went in recently and was sad to see that his baseball photo from his 1 hit game pitched at CHS was gone. Gonna miss that place.

Wow, interesting praise.

We tried it a couple of times and just gave up. Locally, felt we got a better sub at Pathmark at a much lower price.

I liked the Blimpies in lower Manhattan much better.

My first Blimpy: 6th Avenue, across from Jefferson Mkt., upstairs.

Oh, and I like the $2 Sammy's at Quizno's. Just enough for a light appetite...

Then, of course, there's home-made, too. :hungry:
