BOE Election Results

If my wi-fi holds out, I will be posting results of the BOE election here as they come in.

Is there a site that posts the results

County posts official results at http://www.essexclerk.com/election/ElectionFrame.html

Congratulations to Maini, Sabin and Pai!

While these three are currently in the lead by a bunch, and have been trending in this direction, the Essex site says we're only up to 21/33 (63.64%). Since the next candidate is ~300 points behind, it's possible that another 5K votes from the other voting districts could change things.

Does anyone know which districts are still out?

It's over.

Is this a big surprise? Feels like it.

No surprise here!! Woot woot!

Two out of three for me. I sincerely don't know what Chris brings to the table, but I wish them all great success. Our students deserve no less.

Only on MOL is this a big surprise. Fear is defeated.

Says the guy who was attacking candidates for speeches they gave to elementary school kids and outing other MOL users. You, sir, are a prick.

IAgree

A thanks to all the candidates and a congratulations to the winners.

Congratulations to all the candidates. This was a contentions campaign, like many in the past. The board still has people with many different points of view, and, as in the past, they will have to work together and compromise to get things done. No one wants to delevel the high school. Maini and Sabin were always committed to the idea the there will be AP, and there will be Honors. What access actually means is obviously something that all concerned decided to work out in the future, perhaps in the hope that a good process can legitimate whatever detailed policy emerges.

And I thought the contest was between the Pai slate and the Raab slate and that Sabin and Maini were outliers.

I asked questions and got lots of answers but am surprised.

Can someone "in the know" explain?

Congratulations and good luck to the winners. Thank you, Wayne Eastman, for your service.

Not really, but by all means carry on.

I'm far, far from being in the know, so apologies for butting in, but keep in mind that you asked your questions on a forum that comprises a self-selected crowd, then refined your request further by soliciting opinions only from participants you already had some affinity for. Chances of getting a sampling of comments that was representative of the community were small.

The Maini-Sabin yard signs were legion. That said, I don't think there's any shame in being surprised when a three-term incumbent/board president loses an election.

Given that this is about selecting citizen volunteers for a position of service, not professionals, and leaving aside the politics for a moment, what *doesn't* Chris Sabin bring to the table?

He grew up in Maplewood (in a family of active citizen volunteers) and went to CHS. He is raising his kids here. He is a successful professional with significant community service in town with kids sports.

The BOE is a representative body. Clearly he has a constituency.

This is meant as an observation rather than a criticism, so I hope nobody will be offended, but...

The MOL crowd seems to skew a bit older, and my sense is that conventional wisdom here is a bit out of touch with younger generations of Maplewoodians. Anecdotally, it seems like a whole lot of younger people I know--people with kids in the elementary schools, mostly--voted for Maini and Sabin. It's the same crowd that went for Lembrich (which had nothing to do with the Post Office). These are people who feel like their generation hasn't been represented on the TC and wasn't being well-served by the school board, and they wanted people who they thought reflected their generation and values instead of representatives of the old guard like Ryan and Eastman. I could be wrong, but that's my general impression of the dynamic in this election.

Also: a resounding defeat of the slate that was perceived as delevelers, which doesn't come as anything of a surprise to me. Deleveling is never going to be a winning platform in Maplewood.

If you think Lembrich had nothing to do with the P.O. you really are sleeping.

I'm not saying Lembrich had nothing to do with the Post Office whatsoever. I'm saying among the younger people I know who voted for both him and Maini/Sabin, that's not what it was about. A lot of people just wanted somebody younger on the TC.

I'm not as sure that it is generational, but it may well be. MOL also skews to the "policy wonks" ...those of us who hang out online, watch debates, do comparison research on the issues, etc. We may skew toward incumbents who can speak very clearly on Board issues

In this election, I think networks and name recognition were also very important...both of our new members have deep exposure to local parent through paid or volunteer activities. I wish them well, hope that their supporters have picked well for us, and will do my best to support them. Thanks to all who ran

Notable to me is the huge number of undervotes- over 4400. Does this mean that a significant number ofpeople walked into a voting booth and either didn't vote for BOE or didn't vote for all 3 spots?

I would assume you were an undervote if you did not vote or vote fully in the state General Assembly election.
