Bill Cunningham, fashion-trend-spotter extraordinaire, dead at 87

The Sunday Times Styles section won't be the same without his colorful weekly photo essay.

I just saw that. Very sad news. The documentary about him is well worth watching. It's on Hulu.

I don't know anything about fashion, but I enjoyed his pieces in the Times.  Sad.

The beauty of his work was that it made you enjoy his observations whether you cared a whit about fashion or not. His enthusiasm was contagious, and he put fashion in the context of the times, as though he were taking the pulse of both people and place.

What an amazing man. On the Street was great in the paper, and got even better when he started narrating it as a video online.

Here's a little sampling of his work, with the trailer for the documentary about him at the end. I love the first array because all year round, he wore a jacket in that shade.

Bill Cunningham New York Times

I am shocked to read of Bill Cunningham's passing. What a  wonderful humble man! I never missed his fashion videos in the NY Times.com. His photography was great as were his comments.

I am not very interested in fashion either but he was a fascinating character, as I learned when I stumbled upon the documentary BILL CUNNINGHAM NEW YORK.

met Omar Z Robles earlier this year at a photography event. He showed a slideshow and in it was this pic of a dancer with Mr. Cunningham photobombing and snapping his own pic

Today's Sunday Styles section is dedicated to Bill's life and work. This reprinted article from 2002 tells of how he "stumbled" into his career, a combination of the times (with a lower case 't'), his self-effacement, and his (p)luck.
