Best place to get cartons/boxes for moving?

Need cartons/boxes to pack up books and household stuff for a move. Where's best place to get them?

Wine boxes are free and are the perfect size for books.

You can order them online and have them delivered or go to Home Depot and load up.  Online can be a little less expensive if you can get free shipping.

Or, you can beg, borrow and steal if you have the time and energy.

iirc, boxes from HD were sturdier than those from U-Haul.  The ones provided by movers seemed sturdiest.

I have a number of large cartons (8 x 14 x 36 and up to 12 x 18 x 48).  You can't use for books, but they are fine for clothing, christmas ornaments and other lightweight items.

If anyone can use, I will deliver in Maplewood.

@tomcat -- I will pm you.

@mjh - Re "order online" -- any particular source? There appear to be many.

Thanks for the suggestions.

We just moved and are still unpacking. You are more than welcome to help yourself. PM me if interested. In Maplwood..

Do liquor stores (e.g., Wine Library) still give those out for free? I wondered whether they were recycling more.

Do you need some of those air pillows for fragile items? I have a nice amount from a shipment I just received that I would like to avoid putting in the recycle.

Wine Library has stacks of wine and beer cases in the exit hallway, past the cash registers. I think Gary's in Madison stores them in the entryway on the Prospect Street side.

@pmartinezv - Thanks, but we're okay for now.

@j_r - Yup, thanks. We just got a bunch from Wine Library. (And will probably go back for more.)

Uline is great for moving supplies.

pmartinez - if you still have the air pillows, I would love to take them off your hands. Let me know. thanks!

They are yours. I will send you a PM. I can put them out tonight or tomorrow if you prefer.

Wine stores keep those boxes for customers who are buying a lot of bottles, for ease of carrying, but they are usually willing to give some away if they have plenty to spare.

BTW, beer boxes are better than wine boxes for packing books. If you pack a lot of wine boxes with books, the move will be very tough on the back. Beer boxes are smaller but still hold a good number of books. We should know... We have a billion books!

ISO boxes of all sizes in case anyone has some they are trying to get rid of- thanks!

I sent you a PM @marcsiry.  I have a few boxes if you are interested.

I have taken a TON of boxes from liquor stores for our upcoming move. They're good for books and other dense, heavy things like dishes. And they're happy to give them away -- less breaking down/recycling for them to deal with. Also ask at places like Trader Joe's. Staples told me they get their deliveries on Tuesdays and that Tuesday afternoons would be the time to hit them for boxes before they cut and break them down, but I haven't tried that yet. But, assuming that's true, just think of the boxes you'd leave with.

I bought these for our move--the perfect size for books, and easy to fold flat and store once you're done with them. (I got them at Target, other places sell them, too).

I think the storage place across from Zen pets on Valley has a sign that says they supply moving boxes.
