I had a pie from the place on Ridgewood near the SO border and it was good, not great. I've seen 2-3 other shops--Roman Gourmet, the place across from the HS, the one at the beginning of Maplewood Ave. Are there others? Does one trump the rest? TIA.
I am not really partial to the Roman Gourmet. In the past I have gone to the tratoria from time to time, but the last few times I wished I had ordered the pie well done. (One day it looked like it was out of a TV commercial. All the topping and cheese had moved to one side of the pizza. I have never seen that happen to any pizza before.)
Roman Gourmet is the best, when hubby and I get pizza it's always from there, but it is pricey. I'm not saying that it's outrageously expensive, just that it's a little higher that what you'd expect to pay for a pie.
Well after that dip*hit deliberately burned down his pizza joint on SA (Pizza Primo?), I have to say Roman Gourmet is the next best thing around that my wife and I found so far...
Joe's is another one that I feel needs to be ordered well done. The pizza is very good when it is cooked, but I think sometimes they pull it out of the oven a few minutes too early.
Is it just me or have others had problems of pizzas in recent times being undercooked?
Since you are new to the area and we are disscussing pizza, I feel compelled to recommend Star Tavern which is in Orange. This place is known throughout Essex County and people drive there from all surrounding towns for pizza.
The pizza there is excellent, and we go there often, but you should go more to avoid that awkward moment when a fellow Essex County resident mentions Star Tavern, and you say, "I've never heard of it.
Much better to say, "I love their special with the pine nuts." Then people will know you're serious about New Jersey Pizza.
They don't deliver. We've eaten there with wife pregnant, baby in carrier, and every stage since. Okay, there was a period when I went and picked up the pizza.
The pizza is flat crust, small pies. I don't know why but it tastes different from other pizza -- noticeably different.
Try it with pick up if it's easier, but don't show up on a Fri or Sat night to pick up at the last minute. There will be a line. Call in the order, then go and pick it up -- there will still be a line.
Self Proclaimed PizzaWhore OK. New friends always think I am joking when I tell them I eat pizza every day - until they get to know me.
First rule ---- Never ever ever eat pizza right out of the oven and never ever have a fresh pie put right in the box. Pizza that goes from the oven to the box or plate will always be soggy and limp. The best tasting slice will always be reheated. It should be baked and then after it has cooled down and settled, returned to a high heat oven (if you bring it home, reheat under the broiler or on baking bricks in a 500 degree oven. Shoot, Now i have to go make my breakfastdinner pizza, brb
Star is pretty good. Love the thin crust, draft beer and video games for the kids. Bunny's is good when I'm in the right mood for the atmosphere. Love the garlic salad there. We alternate between Maplewood Pizzaria and Arturo's for delivery. Not such a huge fan of Roman Gourmet or Trattoria. I guess there's no place that I think is absolutely fantastic.
Where is Frank's? Is that Sunrise Pizza? I never got around to trying them. Are they still open?
I have to say, I hate Marty's (on Ridgewood near SO by Milk Money). That's some bad generic pizza. My fave is Bunny's. Very nice thin-crust. Czech it oot, mon.
My husband and I have different favorites for different types of pizza. Best "traditional" pie-Maplewood Best thin crust- around here Star (but the real winner is a place called Towne Hall in Rahway by far the best thin crust pizza I have ever had) Best speciality pie - Roman Gourmet
Auturo's is the place that SHOULD have the best pizza, but doesn't. When I walk by shop and smell the wood burning in their oven, it reminds me of Naples. But then, you get the pizza and find that the it is very tough and the cheese is sub par, and damn, you wonder how they could blow it when they have a wood burning oven. It's too bad, as they have a nice salad, and the folks there are nice as well.
We tend to order from Maplewood Pizza. Very nice people, good, consistent, NY traditional style pizza.
