Best Method for Cleaning Clear Glass Shower Doors

Any great suggestions?

Keep silicone squeegee in shower - use after every shower.

+1 Daily squeegee use

Mr Clean Magic Eraser

This. I had a squeegee but couldn't get my husband to remember to use it. The Magic Eraser worked wonders.

Yes prevention with a squeegee beats cleaning after the fact. Once you get in a routine it is easy.

just can't be bothered to squeegie after every shower. Magic eraser- really? Dry eraser on dry glass?

Squeegee is the only way to go. It takes under five seconds (about the time it would take to straighten a shower curtain) and the bathroom looks 100 percent better than if you left the drips.

yes, I understand but it just isn't going to happen. It takes time and the squeegee sitting there or hanging there is gross to me. I'd rather clean it well once a week. I usually use soft scrub on a sponge which works well on build up but never heard of using a magic eraser. So, dry on dry?

There are things worth fighting for and things to let go. I wasn't going to start an issue about squeeging the door after the shower, so I let it go.

Conandrob, no, you get the magic eraser wet and then use it like a sponge, but without added soap.

This is actually why when we had out bathroom redone I specified NO doors for the tub, I wanted a shower curtain. My husband wanted doors, I pointed out that he didn't clean them and didn't use the squeegee, and he dropped it right then and there. Tossing the shower curtain in the wash is easier than cleaning shower doors.

thanks, spon. Will try the wet magic eraser!

Old English Lemon Oil  (or any other brand) to clean.

Putting Rain-X on clean shower doors once a month works.

This!  We recently moved to a house with glass shower doors.  I basically told my husband that he could use the squeegee every shower or we could remodel the bathrooms.

This has been an effective strategy to support squeegee use.  (It doesn't bother me to use it, but it took a bit of effort to get used to it).

For anyone who uses a lot of magic erasers (also excellent for getting crayon and pencil off of walls if you have little artists in the house) you can buy the generic ones on Amazon.com. Look for "melamine sponges."

huh. Rain x sounds like a great idea too

I've never used rain-X in the shower, but I have used it on the car. There are two ways to apply, buff until no streaks, or apply until hazy and then spray with water. The second method works just as well and takes a lot less effort. I'm sure you could use that approach for applying it to the shower doors if you have a hand held shower nozzle. Just remember to ventilate well when applying.

I found an interesting way of cleaning called the Blue Rain cleaning method. Might come in handy for shower doors too. Check for this infographic on how to clean glass streak free which claim to last peak best for 6 months. It should be applicable for doors too I guess https://www.clerawindows.com/blog/best-way-to-clean-windows/

i'm now using a quick combo of baking soda, cleaning vinegar (white vinegar) and a couple of drops of oil of cloves a couple of times a week to do tiles and grouting; the vinegar is usually enough to cut through the soap scum on the glass door and walls if they're still wet. If still streaky, quickly wipe over with an old towel that has a drop of oil of cloves or lemon, to polish (and stop mould or fungus growing).

Saves $$$ especially in this horrid tropical season. I'm not sure if your bathrooms are over-heated in winter...

Oh and modern newspapers aren't good for cleaning glass. The kind of 'ink' is all wrong.

Plain white vinegar works great removing the scum of the very hard water we have in this area.

Mixture of blue dawn soap and white vinegar followed by an application of Rain-X works wonders.

I don't have any suggestions for hard water stains, but I've found that this homemade scouring powder works well on soap scum.

2 parts baking soda (I buy it in bulk at Costco)

1 part salt (I also buy this in bulk at Costco)

1 part washing soda (can be found in the laundry section of most supermarkets) or Borax

I mix these and then keep it in a cleaned out shake cheese container. Yeah, I know, you don't use cheap shake cheese. If you only use high quality, hand crafted parmigiano-reggiano from grass fed cows, then find a friend who does use the cheap stuff and get an empty shaker can from them.

Wet the tub (hand held shower attachment works best for this) then sprinkle on some scouring powder. Wait a few minutes and then scrub lightly with a shower brush. It doesn't take a lot of heavy scrubbing at all, and trust me, I don't always keep my tub sparkling clean so I can attest that it does work on built up soap scum too.

Our cleaning person suggested plain white vinegar in a spray bottle, full strength. Just spray the glass doors after a shower and let it air dry. Works really well. Will try the Magic Eraser for a once a month go as we have very, very hard water in East Orange.

Best Regards,

Ron Carter

The magic eraser works well on some things, but remember, after wetting with water, it becomes very abrasive, like fine sandpaper. it is probably ok on glass, but I would be cautious.

I used vinegar in a spray bottle to remove the hard water and soap that had accumulated - took about soakings, but it worked. Stop and Shop sells vinegar in a spray bottle for cleaning. For maintenance, I spray a daily shower cleaner after every shower on the walls and use the squeegee on the doors every day. Sounds like a lot but it really isn't - takes a couple of minutes.

I agree with others here that once you get it clean prevention is best. Squeegee after every shower. Once you get in the routine it is not a big deal. Even our 13 year old who does not do much in the house mostly does this.

Heloises hints! Love it!

Note that vinegar and lime away will etch natural stones like travertine. So be careful!

Yeah. Good point. Just use the lime away on your glass. It really works well.
