We had two really great experiences at Beacon Jewelers this week. I thought everyone should know how wonderful Tony at Beacon is. Not only did he counsel my daughter about an issue with her engagement ring (made elsewhere) but he helped me with watches. I learned that after 40+ years here in Maplewood, Beacon is doing an extensive renovation and will have a Grand Reopening in October. I urge everyone to get in for his 40% off sale prior to the renovation and then to rewelcome them back to Maplewood. As always, please try to shop local and support Downtown Maplewood and Springfield Avenue.
Tony is a gem (ha!)...we've gone to him over the years on a host of things with nothing but good things to say. Nice to hear they are updating the inside, as it can surely use it.

+1

I always recommend him when someone asks about jewelry, doubly so if they need repairs or work done.

I too had a nice experience here a few years ago - ran in to have a ring cleaned quickly and they did it for no charge (even though it wasn't purchased there). Lovely people.

That's great to hear! I've only been there for service, and haven't bought anything there, but they've been great and have a wonderful sense of humor

We've been to Beacon for little things (watch battery replacement) and big things (a birthday present from Mr Bep) over the last 13 years -- the owners are genuinely lovely people, and we're so happy to hear that their business continues to do so well! Thanks for starting this thread & sharing the news.

Where in maplewood are they?

Corner of Baker and Maplewood Ave in town.

In 15 years I've never even stepped in there. Was not even sure it was open anymore. I like the old fashioned look of the store, but did not think they would have anything I could afford. That's great news about the renovation. Will check them out, finally. Hope they stay there forever.

I love Beacon Jewelers I have been using them both to purchase jewelry and service over the years. Did not know about the renovation or the 40% sale. I will check them out.

took a beautiful antique ring, with a HUGE white topaz stone, to have one prong repaired, very delicate filigree work involved, fixed, cleaned, and very affordable!!

Not by a long shot, at least not in that location. I don't know what's oldest, but Maplewood Stationers is much older. The liquor store in the Village I believe is much older, too. And Woolley Fuel claims to date to 1924.

And Beacon can help you with custom work. I had bought a set of rubies (ear rings & ring) for Tabby, and Toy took care of settings. He also handled a large black star sapphire pendant for me.

Re: oldest stores Don't forget Albert Dobrosky next door... He's gotta be in his 80s.

Bacon jewelers.......uuuuuuuuuuuuummm

They are amazing and the nicest people ever. They will clean your engagement ring for free while you are getting a manicure. They also do custom work. He showed me a beautiful anniversary band he was working on that was amazing.

Tony made a beautiful custom necklace with a Guatemalan jade for my husband as my Christmas gift before our son came home. Such a great guyoh oh

They have all sorts of price points in there - and yes, the nicest people. They can also order things for you if you don't see exactly what you want.

I've always loved going in there for minor jewelry repairs, watch batteries, some chatting.....my husband got me a lovely bracelet there with rose quartz cabochon stones...glad to hear the store is staying in town!

I love Tony and Beacon Jewelers! I became a fan years ago when my boys were young. They went there to buy me a Christmas gift and they told him how much they had to spend and he helped 3 little boys pick their mom a present. A stranger even gave them money to cover the tax when they came up short. This is why I love Maplewood and why it is important to keep business like Beacon in business. They are the heart of our town.

What a beautiful story, @tupperjo!

Thank you all for such a positive response. I'm so glad you all feel the same way I do.

Are you sure about this? We were there today to inquire about having a piece repaired and it looks like they have limited summer hours (closed Sun, Mon, and Tues) but are staying open through the summer. I didn't see anything about them closing for renovations. I forgot to ask Tony, but I do have to go back in a few weeks to speak with him again (it is an extensive repair, don't ask, I didn't do the damage) and I will ask him then.

Can they do appraisals?

Yes, Tony is renovating the store. Work begins very soon and he is planning a Grand Opening in the fall. Can't wait!
It only helps the Village to have a newly updated space.
Having a personal jeweler that I can trust is terrific.

Beacon has had limited summer hours for many years.

It was just that the OP made it look as though they were closing for renovations, but the hours I saw posted didn't reflect that.

krnl is right. Beacon Jewelers has always had shortened hours in the summer.

I am not questioning the shortened hours, I am questioning the post which implies that they will be closing for renovations. I am worried that if they are NOT doing that, posting it erroneously might cost them business as why would people waste a trip down there if they think they are closed until their reopening in October.
