Bar Mitzvah Party Venue? archived

I know there have been threads on this already, and I've read them, but I'm asking anyway - could people recommend some interesting places to have a Bar Mitzvah party? It will be an afternoon, directly after services sort of thing. I already have a stellar DJ; now just need a place!

Oh, do NOT want Powerhouse or any of the sports facilities. Want to make this a little bit different, but not outrageous. Would prefer a place that has food so I don't have to hire a caterer, but that's not mandatory. Doesn't have to be immediately local, but not too far away, either.

And it's in October, so I am indeed running out of time.

TIA!!
A friend of mine just co-hosted a gala at the Liberty Science Center - seemed like an interesting venue...

Need some more information...how many people? adults and kids? more formal sit down affair or less traditional? boy or girl?

Bar Mitzvah, so it's a boy. grin

Not a final headcount yet, but perhaps around 100 people. Mix of adults and kids, with heavy emphasis on kids. Meal TBD, depending on venue/caterer (if necessary). Thx!

ess..sorry..duh of course BAR is for a boy...my bad...I remember when my kids were on the circut, one party was at a lounge in Montclair...near the train station, upstairs (sorry I forget the name). There was also a pool party at Headquarters plaza that was fun. Center Court tennis club also rents out the facility and I hear they do a really nice party in the indoor club. Maplewood little club is another option, but I think you have to bring your own caterer in there.

ess - happy to talk to you about all the places I've shot over the last few years and the pluses and minuses.
Happy to give you ideas on 'themes', etc...
Happy to spend 30mins with you over coffee with no expectation of getting a booking.
Just looking to help out.

If you don't already have it - joy.yagid@gmail.com

@joy - Thank you, and I am going to take you up on that! Would much appreciate. I do need a photographer as well. Speak soon!

Photography is personal. My look may not be your look and it's only business.
So, just let me know when you're around and you can pick my brain.

Hey Ess, would love to hear about your stellar DJ...looking for one for next year!

Would Club 4Sixty6 qualify as too outrageous?

Does Boxcar at the Short Hills train station do this sort of thing?

@joy - Email!
@deborahg - I emailed you, as well.
@SO Refugee - I don't know much about Club 4Sixty6 other than the fact that I drive by it every day (twice!). Have you ever been there?

Boxcar...interesting. Do they have room for a dance floor and all that?

No way! They are small.

E - I have not; however, I know of a certain local DJ who has worked a party there. Not sure if you are using him or someone else but Jersey Fox could give you the rundown.

This may be the event space in Montclair.http://www.eventsbyjoni.com/loft.htm. I did two events with Joni, one (actually, adult/family during day a nd a kids party at night) at http://www.yogiberramuseum.org/museum_rental.php before the renovation and one luncheon at Temple. She was great to work with.

Thank you, @soresident. The Loft actually looks pretty cool. I'll reach out to her, although I don't need help with a DJ. Is there a significant upcharge using an event planner? When I did this for my daughter, I secured all the services - venue, caterer, music, flowers, etc.

We really loved Suzy ques for an event last year. Not sure if all that pork works with a bar mitzvah, but it exceeded our expectations.

The Maplewood Club (Tennis on Ridgewood) rents out for parties of the size you describe. However, you would need a caterer....

I've heard good things about The Maplewood Club. It's on my list. I'm not 100% against a caterer, but it would certainly simplify things if I didn't need one.

We used Orange Lawn Tennis Club a few months back and it was wonderful (and the food was delicious!).

Ess, I am catering/event planning a Bar Mitzvah at The Maplewood Tennis Club Dec 15. Feel free to stop in to see the setup and get some ideas (12:30 - 4:30).
Best of luck!

Actually my daughter attended a bar/bat mitzvah reception at 4Sixty6 and had a great time, so might be worth checking out.

Other venues my kids have visited as guests are probably already on the "usual suspect" list. Went to one at Martini bar in Millburn (afternoon before they opened for dinner), and that was cool.

And Laura - I'm shooting that one and looking forward to it! Should be a lot of fun!

We had our daughters party there and the food was excellent, the atmosphere lovely, the owners are very nice and made everything as special as could be for us.
They open the restaurant to private parties on sat. afternoons, so our party had the whole house for ourselves. The kids had a fabulous time. There was a room to eat in, a dancing room, and a room upstairs as well for people to hang out and talk in.

It was reasonably priced and additionally: since they have no liquor license you can just go to the store and buy wine/beer/etc, at cost, and bring it in and they will serve it. That saves a lot of money right there.

We hired a d j and they were fine with that.

HIghly highly recommended.

Club 4sixty6 and club Pure were my daughters favorite venues, having attended about 40

I've heard good things about clubpure in South Amboy. http://www.clubpurenj.com/index2.php#/home/

My son recently went to one at Club Pure. He loved it! We also recently went to one at Giorgio's, which we all liked very much as well.

Lots of great suggestions here! Thanks! And please keep 'em coming!

Yogi Berra museum sounds pretty cool for a bar mitzvah.
