Assault and Robbery

Last night, 5/22, at about 10 pm, my son was assaulted and robbed. The incident occurred at the corner of Edgewood and Kensington Terrace. 4 teens surrounded him, pummeled him, taking his cellphone. The teens ran up Edgewood and then headed north onto North Terrace, into a waiting car.

Thankfully, he was not seriously hurt.

At this point the Maplewood Police believe this incident and another that happened shortly before on Valley St. are related. So, if anyone saw/heard anything related to each, please contact the Maplewood Police.

Thank you!

I'm so sorry this happened to your son. I'm glad he was not seriously hurt.

I am so sorry to hear this happened to your son.  I hope he is feeling ok.  Should you post this on SOMA Lounge to get roe coverage?  Was it covered by Village Green and Maplewoodian?

Horrifying. I'm so sorry that happened.

Well, that is terrible! So sorry he had to go through that -- must have been terrifying. As you know, wharfrat, I live near that corner and was up at that time but heard/saw nothing unfortunately, but will be on higher alert in the future. Thanks for the warning.

Sorry this happened.  So glad he is not seriously physically hurt.  Hope the mental trauma was not too severe.

I don't know how it profits someone to steal a cell phone.  Owner can report it to provider who can shut it down.  Thief cannot activate it if owner has a PIN.  No?  I'm not tech savvy so maybe I am wrong. Please correct me if so.

wharfrat - so sorry for your son's awful experience.  Thank goodness he was not seriously hurt.

Several years ago I was mugged by a gang of boys (not in NJ) who attacked me from behind while I was walking down the street on a rainy winter night about 8pm. One boy put his hand over my mouth and his arm around my waist and wrestled me to the ground and we struggled.  I had no idea what they wanted because there was no talking.  They ended up stealing my handbag with my license, money, credit cards etc.  I had my apt. keys in my pocket and I was glad for that. I had minor injuries but was very traumatized. Since then, every time I hear footsteps behind me, I turn around to look.

So sorry wharfrat!

No, that's about right.  Not the most profitable of crimes.  Idiots.

I had a very similar experience and occasionally still experience a bit of a "startle reflex" at the sound of footsteps behind me.

Geez.  Terribly sorry to hear this, but good to hear that he's (relatively, given the circumstances) ok.  Hopefully the cameras nearby got film of the vehicle.
