As a Tomo Fan, Finally Found a Worthy Sushi Successor Nearby!

For two decades, while in NJ I've only cared for Tomo at his original Cedar Knolls and then East Hanover locales. Since his retirement, I've tried dozens of places within an hour of town to limited satisfaction. Over the last few months I've been back to one new-ish spot a few times that I've really come to really enjoy. It's also the most unlikely of sushi spots with the caveat that it does not have the same amazing menu breadth as Tomo.

The place is inside a bubble tea store. It's run by a lovely young Indonesian and Thai couple who are just passionate about their craft (I'm one of those who generally have big mental red flags waving if the itamae is not Japanese but the quality and experience overcame that). It only serves omakase for 6 guests at a time, with two sittings for dinner service.

Place is called Cobra Tea in Caldwell.  Needs reservations ahead of time.  Omakase runs about $80 per pax I believe, which is reasonably priced.  I hope they continue to succeed and up the sushi game in NJ.  I still can't believe I tried sushi in a boba shop. It's still hard to fathom and kinda weird but so very glad I did.
