Are UGGs worth the money? archived

Dec 17, 2007 at 1:19pm
My niece hinted around that receiving UGGs boots this Christmas wouldn't be a bad thing. But, WOW, are they expensive! Are they worth the price? Is there a place I could get a deal on them? I probably will not see her until after Christmas, so maybe I could catch a sale?
Depends on your definition of worth it. If it's a young girl, she's going to want the name, period. If an adult, and not so much a fashionista, landsend and similar have similar.

Try zappo.com. The chestunt color is the latest in color, but the light beige are still cool. So far as sales go, maybe after Christmas but certain sizes can be tough no matter when.

I think Uggs are definitely worth the money. They keep your feet warm with their fuzziness. PLus, they are very attractive (on everyone). There are many different types of Uggs. The tall, the classic, the clogs, and many MANY more. They are also very comfortable. You can wear them anywhere.
I happen to own the chestnut classic Uggs. I really like them for all the reasons stated above.
I agree with cynicalgirl. Yes, most girls I know want the name.
I think they would make a really good/cool present for any girl.

Sincerely,
Little ess

Thanks, that helps a lot. I'm not sure I can bring myself to spend so much money on something just for the trendy name, even tho I know she would be thrilled. Maybe she'll be interested in another similar brand after Christmas.

Haha little ess!

Depending upon what your norm is (and I'd find over $125 rather a lot for a niece) and how done with growing the girl is, the trend part is ok as she'll be using them for a few years. If the kid's still growing I probably wouldn't go there. My kid got her first pair in 8th grade (last year) but she was and still is a women's 7.

I think the clogs are kind of cool, but this is one of those things were if she's a teenager, and she wants Uggs, probably nothing other than the real deal will cut it. Her parent might be able to advise.

It's like Northface. Yeah, they're fine but so are plenty of other similar jackets. Except to a teenager!

Nice little ess! Good to get a point of view from someone who is that age!

I would hesitate to spend that kind of money on something you know she will have outgrown by next winter unless she has reached her full growth. But I've never understood spending $$$$ on kids' stuff that will clearly be useless to them within a matter of months. Sorry, the cool factor doesn't merit quite so much in my book. Just another "thing" to brag about and show off. I recently bought my kid a Tommy Hilfiger hoodie. Really nice. $7 at Inspirations in Union (second hand.) It's beautiful and soft and she will get one season out of it. That's the only way she gets "name" stuff and she really doesn't care (which I admire in her and let her know.) I tell her that this way we have more money to spend on vacations/lessons/gear, etc whose memories and skills will last her a lifetime. If I were going to spend that kind of money I'd get ski lessons or something electronic or whatever feeds her spirit besides consumerism.

Well, this is Shh here and while I would not spend the money on my kids' rapidly growing (and large!) feet, I was very happy to put my MIL's gift $$$ to good use by buying them for my 9 & 11 year olds.

I admit I bought fuggs for myself from Costco, but I wear them as slippers (I am always cold).

Truth be told, last year I bought similarly styled Lands End ones for the Shh Girls and they looked like crap very quickly. We are hard on shoes and sometimes it seems the higher priced brands do look nice a bit longer.

Other brands are not SO much less expensive, like Emus and I forget what else. My older girls are both in adult sizes, so if I am going for that style it almost makes sense to buy them a teensy bit big and have them be able to wear them all year.

FWIW, Marshalls does sometimes have them for less $$$ but since I needed to use my MILs CC# online I spent a little more and got what I needed online.

Prices online are all pretty close. Zappos might be a few bucks higher. I ended up ordering from SHoes.com and Neimans because they had the sizes I needed and were the same price and free shipping. Cozy boot is also supposedly a good source.

I myself would love to get the crochet classic tall in black but cozyboots has them backordered until mid January. However, since my BIRTHDAY was YESTERDAY and my husband got me…NOTHING!!! I might order them.

I know that Lord and Taylor carries them and with the coupons and if you open a charge you can save as much 30%. They are so warm and as comfortable as pillows to walk in.

The pricetag feels high, but not unreasonable for what UGGs really are = warm, well-made, sensible boots.

They're a trend, and all the girls want them, but since she got the Uggs I don't have the old last-minute back and forth 3 seconds before she's out the door:

Me: "It's freezing out, aren't you cold? Sneakers aren't for winter! Put on extra socks!..." Blah blah blah.

She wears her nice warm boots to school everyday without a fuss - priceless:wink:

She's 17 so her feet are done growing. It sounds like it could be worth it since the consensus seems to be that they are extremely sturdy. If I can work the price down a bit, maybe I'll go for it. I think I will still wait until after Christmas, tho, so I'm sure I get the style she wants.

nakaille, where is Inspirations in Union? I love stores like that.

If she's 17, then I might consider it IF I could find an awesome deal and IF I really, really liked her!!! ;-)

I almost bought my nephew a "Troy Bolton" basketball jersey. Only available from the High School Musical tour (I got connections) But it's $70 and I am not spending that much money on something he will A) grow out of and/or B) lose interest in.

if you get them, I found Nordstrom had about the best prices - $119 for classic mid-size.

I'd consider them for a 17 year old I was very fond of as she is likely to get a number of years out of them.

Right now I'm wearing wonderfully soft shearling boots (mid-calf) that I found at Inspirations (Stuyvesant Ave in the block just before Morris Ave on the left) last year for $6! I love them! I wear them as slippers and boots both! Don't know the brand. They have a little sheep tag hanging off the top of each boot. I've been wondering what brand they are so I could look around for them. My kid is jealous of them for their sheer/shear comfort (and we're the same size now) so when they go missing I look in her room. I keep going back to Inspirations to see if I can find her something similar (and/or more for me!) I've seen some other wonderful kids' boots (practically unworn as were mine) but nothing in the right size.

In most cases, I've been pretty happy with stuff from Lands End but their fake Uggs definitely did not hold up. And they were maybe $80 vs $120 for the real thing, purchased last year and already dead! Both my kids are asking for the real thing this year and I did see them at Nordstrom but at that point I wasn't ready to get them for one kid and the other kid wanted black which is not to be had anywhere, apparently.

Fake UGGS from Costco are really good.

LOL, and they are only $35. (As I said, they are my current slippers since I go through slippers like crazy! I love them, they are so warm.)

I wonder if you could find an Ugg tag somewhere and iron it on the back!
No, I'm not advocating copyright infringement or anything like that.

Yes, kids what the real thing - nothing quite like UGGS. Here's a hint though - if her feet are small you can buy children's sizes. My daughter is a women's 7 1/2, but she fits into a kid's 6 - for a savings of about $35.

Sounds like the kids' boots are sized for boys. I've done that "cheat" for myself a few times for price/style and durability. It does work.

I wouldn't buy leather -- and you can get less mass made, more well made products for the same or less.

If your kids want "the name" and you give into that, you're teaching them the wrong thing. Name brands have gotta be the most recent materialistic/stupid thing in the marketplace for little kids. Now even 10 year olds want jeans. What values.

Sorry ladies, but from a guys' point of view UGGS are, as the expression goes, butt ugly. Isn't UGGS a contraction of ugly?

Bob, I agree, I just don't get it, and I'm not a guy. Maybe I'm just not cool. Yeah, that's probably it.

I have a pair of UGGS that are wicked cool. They just had a shipment in at Nordstrom's over the weekend.

Cool and when it's icy out warm and you stay on your feet. You can always look great in boots with heels and fall on your a** !:fingersear:

I agree with Bob and anna...don't see what all the hype is. It's like people can't make up their own style and have to be sheep. Happens every year. First crocs, now uggs..can't wait to see what ugly footwear makes its debut next year. And the designers are laughing all the way to the bank.

And there are plenty of alternatives to boots with heels.

I've never even seen snow boots with heels. There are also many alternatives to boots with leather. You're right, so many trends, so people just can't be individuals - the thing that is also crazy is that these aren't original ideas. Birkenstock had a shoe very close to Crocs before Crocs came out, and the leather boot/slipper/shoe with suede and fluff coming out is very old. My dad had a lovely pair of slippers in that vein (probably still has them) that were ancient.

There is a another Australian boot that is the same design called EMU(sp) sold at Roxy in Millburn. You cannot tell them apart and they are about 40-50% less than UGGS. cecilia

Fluger, I am sorry but it's always the same story with you, right? My kids are spoiled because my MIL is spending $250 on each of them? Isn't that what you said?

I certainly don't spoil my kids with name brands, but some things, IMO are worth a little extra for fit, style, etc. For instance, for years and years I bought Gap or Old Navy jeans on sale, trying to find a decent fitting pair. Why not, if I could get them for $15! Now, I try to find higher end jeans on sale, like 7 for all Mankind. The fit is so much better for me. I bought a pair probably 5 years ago for under $40 from Annie Sez, and they are still in heavy rotation.

Uggs have been in fashion for several years now, it's not just a fad. Why? They are warm and comfortable! I don't even own a pair, but to criticize people for wearing them or wanting them is just silly.

I am all for individuality, and I don't push logo brands on my kids at all, but give it a break.

Shh thanks and AMEN!

Look, teenagers are teenagers. Whether their chosen style is pink hair streaks/hideous piercings/Doc Martens, or Uggs/Northface/tight jeans, or baggy jeans/workboots/Tommy Hilfiger stuff they want to fit in and wear the uniform of the group to which they belong. Yeah, it's stupid at times but no stupider than certain adult uniforms about town, car preferences etc.

No, I personally wouldn't spend that kind of money on a kid who's still growing. And no, I don't care about labels. But, I do recall my mother's tone-deafness to some of this stuff and what a drag it was to go along with her choices -- even if the options were money-neutral. As a result, if my kid wants to be a bit of a "lable whore" and it's within the planned budget or her earned money, so what?
