It's my understanding that for a 13 year old, a cash gift is an ecumenically, interdenominationally appropriate gift.

Is there a typical amount?

Probably depends on your relationship to the confirmand. Is this a friend's kid? $20 should elicit a thank you note. Close nephew? $50 should do.
Are you a godparent? Maybe $100.
Is it your son? Nothing. You've already given so much.
maybe a small $5 token gift of a religious nature and a cash/gift card gift. although it may be hard to find a religious gift he will actually appreciate. maybe something as simple as religious themed pens/pencils-something practical with a religious message.
