I've been collecting estimates on the replacement of my boiler. So far, the prices are pretty much the same. PSEG seems to offer the best warranty (12 months) plus you can pay off the boiler over 12 months interest-free. They use Weil Mclain boilers.
Has anyone had experience (good or bad) using PSEG for a boiler replacement?
Haven't done it for a boiler but we did get a hot-water heater through PSEG under a similar plan. Worked out well. They use local sub-contractors, not PSEG employees. Wish we'd known/thought about the option when we had our boiler replaced. I'm sure they would have done it right the first time, I'm sure, instead of the crappy service we got. We heard recently from a contractor that our boiler looked like it had been dropped, literally, during installation.
We had them install our hot water heater a couple of years ago. They contracted the job out to a plumber and we did the 12-month interest free payment as well. It's worked well and we've been happy with it.
Our boiler was installed by Petro - and they did a great job (every time we get a plumber down there, they look at it and complement the installation - I wonder how they know by just looking at it, but I don't understand most of what plumbers know... :wink
Contact Phil Masucci. He installed a new water heater for us on Friday. He beat another plumber's estimate by a lot, and he and his crew seem to have done an excellent job.
Good for Phil. I haven't used him yet, but had intended to next time I need a plumber. I know that this is a sensitive subject (price), and I know that Essex County in general is more expensive than say Monmouth County, but I use a plumber in Monmouth County for our house there who is probably 2/3 the cost of the plumbers I've used here. They're great, but quite honestly, I just don't get that big of a price difference. I had one of the plumbers mentioned on this board replace a water heater last year and it was 1/3 more than the cost of replacing the same heater this summer at our house in Monmouth Co.
My concern with using a referral service, like Home Depot, PSEG, Lowes, etc, is that you get who ever is available on the schedule. Maybe you'll get a great plumber, like the guys that post here, or...not.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that nothing breaks or stops working at home anytime soon... but my first choice would be to call one of the well regarded plumbers who are mentioned here and/or who post here. First, you know they are local, they are well known to be good, and, if, you need them to come back -- their reputation is on the line. At PSEG, you probably get an 800# to call.
Though the PSEG financing would be an attractive option, especially this time of year.
And since no one said it explicitly, Gateway is an excellent plumbing company, and we've used them many times, too. I would still recommend them as well as Phil.
I too recommend Gateway ... they installed our gas fired Weil McLain steam-heat boiler 5 years ago -- and they properly sized it as well, b/c 5 years later it purrs like a kitten. A very warm kitten, but it still purrs.
They have done several other jobs since then. The boiler is working great -- and the fact it didn't work right over the weekend was a PSEG/gas line issue -- had nothing to do w/the boiler.
We used PSEG 10+ yrs. ago to replace our old oil burner with a gas fired system. NO problems. At that time PSEG price was competitive a/o lower than others. Only thing is that the plumber left the area shortly after finishing instalation. But, because we haven't had any problems it really didn't matter.
we used Gateway also and they were very nice. had the original coal/oil furnace removed and the contractor made a mess of my carpet in the basement but Gateway had someone come in and clean it...very dependable...
I don't mind. It was $1800. Remember, jobs vary by difficulty. He installed it in a new location, because our previous heater was electric, and he couldn't put a gas heater in that heater's place.
Thanks for all the advise. I ended up with Service Professionals. Incredibly professional and thorough quote. Their price was in the middle (less than PSE&G, more than a one-truck local) but they put in a higher quality boiler than others, backed it up with a better warranty than the manufacturer (they simply believe in the unit and back it up themselves) and threw in 3 years of service. The installers were incredible. We had a hot water heater done at the same time and they did both in 1 long day instead of a day and a half. They would not leave the house until all the radiators were working perfectly - some radiators had not been working well for years and they could have told us the radiators were a separate issue from the boiler, but they didn't. website: www.service-professionals.com phone number: 877-759-4897
Whatever you do, check first and make sure that your new boiler meets the proper energy standards to qualify for a rebate. I spend a crapload of money changing from oil to gas in 2006 and then went to apply for the rebates from PSEG and discovered neither my boiler nor my hot water heater qualified. I will never use that $%@#&%@ plumber (not one of the ones mentioned regularly on this board) again!
Peteglider, When we converted from oil to gas we worked thru PSEG. We were given a lenghy list of approved contractors and made our own selection. The job wasn't assigned by them.
Moderately relevant: We replaced our ancient POS oil furnace (forced-air) a few years ago with a Weil McLain unit. It is a beautifully constructed piece of machinery that functions extremely well.
Has anyone had experience (good or bad) using PSEG for a boiler replacement?
TIA as always.
