Any anti-Trump rallies in Maplewood?

As far as I can tell, there hasn't been any public protests of Trump in Maplewood. Have there been any marches or vigils here, beyond a few private meetings last week? This diverse community voted overwhelmingly for Clinton, and many people here will be negatively affected by the Trump regime, but on a public level there seems to be silence... just saying!

NYC is a half hour by train. Just sayin'

A couple of things:

There is a national march in Washington Jan 21st and there are already more than a dozen buses chartered from our two communities alone. Everyone who has signed up for these buses has already paid their fare, so it's a clear commitment to attend. And I understand that there are fundraising efforts happening over the next two weekends to raise money for the ACLU (the organization that will be attempting to fight for our freedoms in the courts.)

It is not that nothing is being done. People are trying to figure out where and how to help. Do you have any constructive organizing ideas that you would like to share, futureSenior?

Also, Montclair is having a march today and I imagine some of us will be attending that as well.

Exactly Protests should be sizable and visible. NYC or DC

I haven't seen any info on a NY gathering on 1/21 for those who can't make it to DC. Anyone have any info on that?

There will be a rally in Trenton on the same day, Jules.

I went to the march in NYC last Saturday, I am going to the DC march and have donated to the ACLU. It just seems so placid here, like nothing ever happened.. I do think small, local grassroots protests are important to keep up the momentum, but I don't know how to do this, besides walking around town with a cardboard sign! Like everyone, this horrible event has taken me by surprise. I know everyone is looking for ways to help.. just want to vent my frustrations. thanks

futureSenior. I, too, am looking for ways to be a part of this resistance.

I think that people are still reeling and trying to digest what is happening as the news worsens with each appointment being considered by DT. I agree with you that grassroots work is a necessary component of our efforts.

As a local psychotherapist I have spent much of the past week and a half talking with people about their concerns for themselves, their families and our nation. I do believe that one of the best ways to manage the rage, fear and despair that many are experiencing is to find and join with others who are equally concerned. Morganna has created a thread on MOL inviting people to share what actions they are taking. I believe there are bake sales planned to help fund the ACLU. If you post on her thread that you are looking for activities and actions to join, I would guess that folks will respond. And you will have helped all of us move forward another inch. Thanks for your persistence.

Maybe start a local facebook group to funnel information? Unless that 's already been done?

Just got more info on the Montclair march that is happening TODAY, Saturday from 4-6 pm. It will begin at the Montclair Public Library: 50 S Fullerton Ave, Montclair, New Jersey 07042 Here is the basic info from the planners:

"In the wake of the election, many are feeling devastated, angry, afraid, divided, even targeted. Many of us were feeling these things even before the election. But if the election has given us anything it has told us that something has to change. Now is the time to band together as a community to help each other find resources and solace. Please join us in a peaceful march to promote diversity, togetherness, strength, inclusivity, bridge building, and action. This is a march that says we know we have work to do as a country and even within our Montclair community, and we are willing to start doing it. The walk will start at the Montclair Public Library, continue up Bloomfield Avenue, and turn down Valley Road to end at Edgemont Park. We will end with a vigil at the park.

Marchers are encouraged to:
*Wear bright colors!
*Please make a sign/poster with a message of embracing community in all its diversity.

This is not an anti-Trump march, but will rather serve to make a statement that we are offended by his speech and policies that threaten so many of us. We will march in solidarity to uphold the rights and dignity of all human beings. Let's make a positive show of love for each other rather than a negative statement of hate. Sticking up for each other and standing together is how we get through. Regardless of who you voted for, we want to make a statement that we are a community that values inclusion and rejects discriminatory language and policies. Our march is a statement that, regardless of politics, we are united in our acceptance of one another and our belief in the democratic values of our country.

The Montclair Public Library is not affiliated with this event."

Thanks for the info, nakaille. I will try to go.. although I am still interested in angry, anti-Trump rallies.

Has anyone thought about organizing a march through maplewood with a rally in front of town hall? I think it is important for everyone to see each other as community with a common purpose.

I always had the feeling that politicians never gave two pesos for the opinion of the man in the street. During the Vietnam business we had a specific goal............to end US involvement in the war. If you did you research it turned out

that before 1954 there was no North and South Vietnam...........just one country Vietnam. After the disastrous

French defeat there the country was divided for what should have been a two year period. At that point elections were

to be held to unify the country. Since the winner clearly would have been Ho Chi Minh..........the US could not allow that. So no elections were held and we imported at first a Buddhist monk from Paterson to be the head of the South.

And on and on and on

After years of marches and all the conventional tactics it was not till the sons of the middle class began arriving

home in body bags and Walter Cronkite declared the war not winnable after the Tet offence that the politicians

started taking notice.

Trump is more insecure than you would think. But sensitive? Lots of luck on that one. His side won and they are

now beginning to enjoy the fruits of their victory. There is such a thing as a silent majority and the tea bag people

They want a return to the past............the job is to show them the way to a better and brighter future and

undermine Trump away from what has become his constituency . And make no mistake, he might have not

won the majority of the votes, but when you are short by only 200,000 or so...........you have a following

I'd be interested in going to PA to protest him during his "Victory Tour".

Try short by over 1.4 million. Votes are still being counted in CA so that number will be higher.

The current vote count is

Trump (winner) - 61,201,031 votes.

Clinton (loser) - 62,523,126 votes.

I don't have the figures in front of me............but he still must have taken 48 per cent of the vote or more

He has a following

This especially shows since practically every poll and every news service was predicting

for Hillary. Over confidence killed the candidate

Yes, he obviously has a following, including right here in NJ and MSO. That does not negate the need to make our values known to the nation at large. Wringing hands does nothing but exacerbate fear and worry.

Keep your hands, hearts and minds healthy, strong and active to create a better future for our children and our future. We can stop this shipwreck, not by bemoaning the election results, but in actions both large and small.

Small actions include standing up for our neighbors when we see threatening or bullying behavior, calling congressional representatives concerning specific bills and appointments, being kind to strangers and looking into their eyes to connect with our common humanity.

Larger actions include protesting in large numbers to show who the moral majority really is in this country. Working to create legislation that strengthens civil rights and liberties for ALL of us.

They win if we do nothing. Don't let them take away your power.

If you look at the results link I posted, you'll see that Trump got 47%. Clinton 48%.

I think hate and evangelicals did her in more than overconfidence (I posted that previously). Haters and those that are told to vote by God tend to have a high turnout.

Too many Clinton polled voters didn't bother to vote. Maybe their overconfidence did her in, not bothering under the assumption she had it in the bag..

For those with anxiety about being part of a large demonstration, a story from someone in Scotland:

For those of you who are contemplating the women's march in January, I write this to describe how a wee bunch of Scots used humour, song and dance to oppose fascism despite being incredibly frightened. Maybe it will help your resolve/ give you comfort that actions such as this can make a positive difference.
I come from a small town in Scotland where a lifelong friend of mine has worked tirelessly to help vulnerable young people. Three years ago, I noticed that she was helping to organise a local rally in response to a right wing group who had been given permission to demonstrate against the users of our local mosque.
I called her to ask her if she could use the services of an egyptian dancer that day as part of the rally and I was in! In the run up, I was cautioned me strongly about the dangers of being publicly involved against the group. It would be easy for me to be a target. I became terrified and questioned if I was assisting human rights or if I was vaingloriously putting myself in the limelight and fanning flames of antagonism. Nonetheless I trusted my friends involvement and knew that she would only be involved in something worthwhile so I held fast.
That day, we walked peacefully through the town and arrived at the mosque in weather that would have merited the construction of Noah's ark. It was here that we danced- people of all ages, faiths and nationalities, children, politicians and even the local police joined in. We were soaked and freezing but we were together, laughing and sharing.

We had previously been barred from coming face to face with the other group, but owing to our good behaviour, the police advised us we could go to the place where they were demonstrating. En route we encountered 3 superheros in brightly coloured latex who were also on their way from the mosque. Again we danced and laughed as we walked through the town, with the superheros waving at children.
When we arrived, there was a pensive atmosphere. It was organised with us on the opposite side of a wide road from the other group. Although many of them looked like frightened children to me, it was still scary when they all took their cameras out and started taking photographs of us. Many of them screamed at us. We hadn't planned to be face to face and were a bit unsure what to do.

We began to produce enthusiastic sound effects as our super heroes gathered together balls of light and threw them across the road to the other side. In accordance with our peaceful aims, when anyone shouted 'nazis off our streets' we shouted 'nazis off our sheep' and then bleated (a small country town, go figure). We then started singing 'we are blacks, whites, muslims, jews and gays'. It was particularly powerful when our entire group managed to sing the Beatles 'all you need is love'. The right wing group stared at us open mouthed. Maybe they could take a wee bit of our compassion home with them?
We all breathed a collective sigh of relief when the group were finally escorted back to their buses by the police (and shed a few exhausted tears). One young guy from the mosque was walking around telling everyone 'we really feel united now'. It was then that it began to sink in, we had done it and people were already feeling the strengthened bonds of community. Later, many of us sat in the pub and we all thanked one another as we all sat around the table holding hands in a circle.

We listened to each others stories of why the rally was important to us and what had brought us together. I honour the courage and dedication of those who organised the rally and everyone who participated. Maybe we were a small group in a small town, but making a stand for unity that day from a place of peace and love was one of the best things I have ever done in my life. It was an honour to stand shoulder to shoulder with these people. All you need is love ...some friends...some shimmying and maybe some superheros with the occasional sheep.

Where is the inforation about signing up for busses? I had one link, but it was broken.

If you dug deep behind their PR and attempted boosting of their own self image........both were losers

I think Trump was seen as a wheeler , dealer in business

Both were viewed upon as out right liars

Hillary must have forgotten over and over when the cameras were rolling and she talked about dodging mortars

at an airport in Bosnia.............

I won't go deep into the Clinton Foundation............but I see 12 per cent of the take not accounted for

And my God, the sense of Entitlement that told her that she did not have to use a secure server for top secret material

Of such things James Bond novels are written

Add it all together and you get President Trump

I don't wring my hands by the way.............and I confess there were times when I was tempted to wring a few necks.........but that is just not my style

Please tell us what you are currently doing, Author, to help our community and our country reclaim its reputation for courage, compassion, honesty and freedom. I'm sure many of us would like to follow your example.

Well for one thing I am dealing with an infected left leg which largely keeps me off my feet for a few days

The woman in my life chooses to use Facebook as a means of communication for herself

I don't think anyone in Chillicothe Ohio is going to listen to my opinion so I don't bother

I am just now finishing up the paper work for the inheritance tax on my late Uncle's estate

Between spending months in nursing him in Middleburg Pa.......and then months which were reduced to a few

days a month in preparing his house for auction, a large part of my life was dedicated to the family

I have kept my Big Fat Greek family appraised through a blog as to when they will receive their inheritance monies which should be

6 to 9 months from now

I was active and actually a founder of Engage to oppose the Droll in the Crown building

My writings were a bit scary for some in the group and not wanting to cause trouble for them I resigned

My writings on the matter for the next year or more were strictly mine

This is Maplewood.........not NewYork City so there is obviously a different way of approaching what must be done

to make it a better place

I don't think anyone in my family ever supported the Republican Party but a solid Democratic Party ruling group

simply has no checks and balances, Don't think I can go there

Would I recommend anyone emulate what I have done over the years............Only if you are me

I am not ready for a wide patent leather belt and pants with big checks on them and the white shoes with the tassels

I like four seasons in my year

I will cherish my memories of the Chicago 7............three of whom I knew

I will teach my 3 grandsons how to fence. The two younger one's have not got the full concept

I gently back them up against the wall with a series of parry's and they reach down and pick up a ray gun

and vaporize me. They have the bigger picture but killing pa pou supersedes the rules of the game

So find your comfort zone............pick your cause and never, never get discouraged

Or you will hear from me

And I will be on Aegina the third week in April..........6 glorious weeks of leaving the English language behind

Life is good

This is a post script............besides my faith in God................taught to me more so

by a kind and loving Grandmother

I have found the words that sustain me..........from Nikos Kazantzakis in Zorba the Greek

"I want nothing

I fear nothing

I am free.."..........

And on a lighter note

"You ask if I am married

Am I not a man?

Is not a man foolish?

Yes I am married

I hope you continue to heal well, Author.

Sent you a pm.

Thanks, got to add some sterile water before applying the silver based salve that my podiatrist recommended

Had water blisters the size of the Hindenburg

" Oh the humanity"

So you want to take back the power. I think some difficult work will have to be done to accomplish that

A very large number of young voters heard the call of the man from the north country

He was not a perennial candidate.............nor did he carry any damning baggage

And yet he spoke of the disparity in incomes across the country

while the other one held her poorly attended rallies but lucrative cocktail parties

I am sure most Bernie supporters voted for her............but they did not bring along friends

and show much enthusiasm in the meantime

There in lies the task. To recognize that they are an important part of the Party

and not so much bring them into the rank and file but listen to and respect them.

Bernie has not ruled out another run but I have my doubts

A man grows old and eventually all the parts no longer work

But the ideas, the ideas will not fade

Reunite the party and take back the Congress

And may you stay forever young

I agree that it will be difficult but I find it necessary. And the path forward includes many acts of peaceful resistance to the growing fascism that threatens not only our democracy but the very lives of family members and friends, We can do this.

It is very necessary to prevent this man and his ideas from taking hold in this great country. Four years is bad enough but I think eight years will find us sliding towards a dark age.

We need also to bridge the gap between the middle class liberal and the tea party people. They have their story

and as much as we may disagree with them.............they need to feel respected and feel that someone is listening to them.

After World War 2 the mines in my dad's town were largely played out. If they got in two days worth of work

a week they were lucky. You worked in the mines, it was largely the only work available. It fed you and the family and there was a certain camaraderie . If something else did not get you , you eventually died of the Black Lung.

It is not a pretty sight and not a good way to go but the price they paid for work .

So the entire middle of the country , where the factories shut down and the only work available was fast food,

very much needs to be addressed. Not by a guy who was born on third base and thought he hit a triple.

It needs to be addressed by those who would have him go away and would do more than march in the streets

It needs to be addressed by those who can create work and reach out to those who sorely need it

Fascism does not spring from a vacuum

It springs from intolerable social conditions and those who

claim that if you and your neighbors follow me...........I will lead you to a better life

Reach out...........these are out brothers with dirt under their nails and the desire to work and

make a difference in this old world. They have their story

Here's the link for the DC rally. There are 5 buses leaving from Maplewood. $60 round trip. Price increases on 11/22. Departs at 5 am and returns at 11:30 pm. I purchased tickets a few hour ago and at that time there were about 40 seats left.

http://rallybus.net/womens-march-on-washington/

Author, thank you for your well-considered post above!

just returned from the Montclair rally. 492 folks......quite an event. a few folks from Maplewood that I could identify.

Protesting in places where you have little opposition doesn't mean much... I wouldn't expect a march here.
