As I was browsing in Words this afternoon I heard the woman behind the counter (owner?) say to a small child "Would you like to sit down and finish your ice cream?" and guided the girl to a seat in the corner. Instead of telling the parent that bringing a small child with ice cream into a bookstore was a bad decision, she diplomatically ensured that the spillage would be minimal and away from most of their valuable merchandise.
I was in awe of her formidable people skills.
Then a family of four walked in and the daughter exclaimed "I love bookstores!" I told her that I was in complete agreement.
