Another liquor store on Springfield - in Furniture Store location

Got a notification yesterday that there is an application for lease transfer of the furniture store property at 1715 Springfield (the current Furniture Store). That space is large, across from another liquor store, across from the already heavily trafficked 7-11 and this seems like a bad step for the neighborhood.

Objections should be made immediately in writing to Elizabeth Fritzen, Municipal Clerk of the Township of Maplewood, NJ and Pradesh LLC, 55 Liberty Lane, Franklin, NJ 07416

I don't think the neighborhood has a say in the matter, nor should we.  Just seems like a foolish business decision with Kaspar's and now the Wine Barrel so close by.

it it possible that Kaspar's is moving across the street?

No -it's a different license number, and the neighborhood can certainly request that the township committee reject the application to transfer. The committee will vote on January 19th at the Committee Meeting at 7:30pm.

Wonder whose license this is.  In any case, neighbors can certainly request that the township reject it.  No idea why this presents such an issue, or whether the town even has sufficient justification to do so, however.  ETA: And as far as I know the TC is expected to review/discuss the application on 1/19, though I'm not sure they will actually vote on it then.

A&P?

I now think it's the Liquor Cabinet.

License was pocketed at time of transfer so not likely to belong to a current business.

They're still open?

Well, they all had licenses open last year simultaneously (WB was active and LC, Springfield Liquor and this new LLC were all pocket licenses).

ETA: WB came from Boyden Pantry, down by Jacoby.

What are the specific concerns about an additional store selling alcoholic beverages?

Given the several stores in the immediate vicinity already mentioned, I'm not sure how adding this one really would matter for the neighborhood.  It doesn't seem like such a smart business move for the owner though.

I don't see any problem with another liquor store. Liquor stores aren't know as store fronr hangouts for rough trade.

The only ones I think would really object are nearby liquor stores.

I'm giving my business to the Wine Barrel.  I have no problem with liquor stores, but I hate seeing people make foolish investments.  This one seems like a really foolish investment.  The WB is going to meet my wine/beer/liquor needs for years to come!

Are the beer coolers fully stocked?  They had a nice selection when I was in before Christmas and still had a lot of room to grow.

Why does a (fill in the blank business type) open near another...especially if that (fill in the blank business type) appears to be successful? Because they think the location and environment is right for them to succeed. Perhaps they think they can be better than other entities nearby, or they can fill a niche that the existing businesses can't. If the market doesn't allow room for both (or more) based on demand, then one (or more) will fail. Maybe that means existing businesses of any sort should look to see what they aren't doing that might allow for some form of competition. Or it might be a situation where someone opening a business isn't terribly smart about their decision. I have seen some business plans recently that were remarkably well done but flawed because of the data or information used to reach certain conclusions. I have seen some recently that were unremarkable but solid and allowed for a business to succeed to a comfortable level and provide room to then build on it.

As for the Wine Barrel or any other wines/spirits/beer store, I don't judge them in their first months of operation just as I wouldn't judge a restaurant for a number of months. It takes awhile to get your footing and your bearings. Someone asked me recently, what do you think the Wine Barrel will sell? I said, they will sell not what people say they want, but what people ultimately buy. Sometimes its the same, sometimes its not. Same goes for this potential new entity...if it opens, they will succeed as long as they carry what people will buy...whatever that ends up being.

The beer looks to be well stocked.   They haven't gotten their wines well stocked yet but they're taking all suggestions for favorites.   Matt, the manager, is a really nice guy and used to be the purchaser for Wine Library.   The prices are competitive.

Spoke to him before Xmas and it seemed they were trying to stock what they could to take advantage of the coming two weeks, and would be filling in the shelves in the new year once they got a handle on things.  Expect the beer selection to grow, some better stuff to come in, and the wines to get more diverse.

As to whether or not another liquor store is right for the space, suppose the owner gets to make that call since its otherwise an innocuous choice from a neighborhood standpoint.  We'd all like to see variety I think, but none of us seem to be opening anything to ensure that.  If anything it just has to be better than the god-awful furniture I get to see every morning.  (Who in hell would buy a chair shaped like a bright pink pump besides a strip club?)

Are you implying that the 2 "conversation pieces" in my living room would be better suited as part of the decor at Frank's Chicken House or  Satin Dolls or the Club House (Dallas Texas) or ....

I heard recently that Franks Chicken House has closed.  Can anyone confirm or refute?

I think it closed a long time ago. It was the first club that came to mind. Hott 22 and shooters have been gone for a minute too

Well this thread just took an interesting turn.

All right. I opened an incognito tab and Googled the aforementioned poultry-themed bar of iniquity. It's closed and reopened as an establishment called "Delilah's Den", no doubt a men's hairstyling emporium.

ah the dirty den ...
