Almost time for THAT annual thread...SEDER

...dare I be the one who asks for a gluten free, dairy free version??? cheese

Happy Pesach everyone! I hope the preparations aren't driving you crazy just yet!!!

While we're talking Seder, if anyone has Failsafe recipe suggestions for Pesach, I'm all ears!

Shoot. For a second I thought we had fast forwarded to "talk like a pirate day."

I was bracing for the great pool concession stand debate

oh oh Darlings, it's Spring in your part of the world! That's Passover - time for Matzah Charlotte!!  cheese

Gluten Free, non-dairy cakes are available here at local supermarkets this year. They are likely flourless.  Companies included Lilly's Bake Shoppe (found at Kings) and Yehuda (an Israeli import) found at ShopRite.

For years my daughter has made the matzoh ball soup.  This year, she's at college so she cant do this.  I asked her for her recipe, and her response was that, no offense, but that I can't do it as well.  I agree.  She also sent me a fun video.

My mom is making her matzoh ball soup, so I will make my own GF Version. They sell a mix which is kind of heavy but actually non-dairy and vegetarian.

She's making brisket with carrots and potatoes and bought some potato and broccoli kugel, so I offered to make a salad. Since it will be predominately all I eat, I wanted to do something substantial (not just greens) but also seasonal. I found a great chopped/layered salad that I'll make (probably with my own variations).

We are not very traditional (no Seder plate and I don't remember the last time we read from the Hagaddah).

Great looking salad! Still full of veg I can't eat, sadly, but the idea of using fresh broth as salad dressing is intriguing. Currently I have no dressing I can use because of tyramines. (No fermented or marinated foods)

Had to laugh at pulled pork ads on the recipe, though cheese Always amuses me the way that happens.

I still have no idea what I'm cooking. I have ingredients I can use, but how I'm putting them together, I dunno. Less than 24 hours to go.

I don't think I'll include broth in my dressing, and the great thing about a salad like this is you can add whatever ingredients you prefer, based on color, texture, etc.

I just liked the presentation! And the combo of greens. I never use iceberg but figured it might add some crunch. I can also use some shredded red cabbage for color and crunch too.

oh oh I can only use iceberg and cabbage! Celery, mung bean shoots if very fresh, green string beans and that's about it.

I've found an Asian-inspired chicken salad that uses poached chicken breast, cabbage, celery, shallots, celery, rice noodles (which I'm allowed) and I won't dress it. I could do citric acid in water instead of lemon juice and sprinkle that, but  I can't see the point. So that's my personal main. Peeled pear for dessert. Steamed snapper for fish, with white of leek as entree.

I have a recipe for flatbreads out of potato flour and quinoa flour which will be my matzah. They'll be soft instead of cracker like. Apparently that's more authentic to the time, anyway. Rabbi's wife says there's no problem.

What's everyone doing for new fruits? I bought D a custard apple (cherimoya). I might be able to get away with a nibble.

An oldie but a goodie:

A British Jew is waiting in line to be knighted by the Queen.

He is to kneel in front of her and recite a sentence in Latin when she taps
him on the shoulders with her sword.

However, when his turn comes, he panics in the excitement of the moment and
forgets the Latin. Then, thinking fast, he recites the only other sentence he
knows in a foreign language, which he remembers from the Passover Seder: "Ma
nishtana ha layla ha zeh mi kol ha laylot."

Puzzled, Her Majesty turns to her adviser and whispers, "Why is this knight
different from all other knights?"

 smile

Wishing all a decent Pesach...

Alas, this season's Seder at LL's will lack a certain type of weighty baked "good" whose name I needn't mention...

I've been wondering if sbenois would show up.... Nice photography!   smile

We have  4 extra quarts of matzo ball soup from Fresh Direct, due to some last minute guest contributions. If interested, please p.m.

Jasmo. I'll trade you some matoh Charlotte for the soup. Hahaha. No really why don't you freeze it?

And, btw dear friends , corn and its starch, are now kosher for Passover    My dessert is no longer tref!

Happy Passover, LL. Glad that you're up and around.

That ruling brought happiness and resolution to this 2-person household. My food restrictions mean that more than ever I'm eating Sephardi-style at Pesach. In the old days, everything had to be completely separated from D's, right down to tablecloths and cooking pots. I was asking my rabbi how to make this year easier when he told me the great news!

My food challenge with the mouthful of custard apple was a dismal failure - well, not a failure, we now know I can't tolerate it. Tongue numb almost immediately, and shocking full-bodied migraine for over 24 hours. Possible hives. Turns out the list I consulted didn't match its partner: the fruit is actually high in salicylate and amines, neither of which I tolerate. LOL
