Affordable tree removal? archived

I have a pretty large tree limb that is hanging from a tree in my front yard. Can anyone recommend a relatively affordable tree service that can cut it down?
Try Redwood Tree Service, 908-464-0360. They're doing a great job on our trees as we speak. The machines they use are very well kept (which is a good sign), and they are very good about clean up. STAY AWAY from Friendly Tree Service in West Orange, they stiffed us on a job last year, took 4 trees down, told us it was 11, never showed up with the massive amounts of mulch they said they were, and continually lied to me on the phone about coming back to finish the job. Ironic name they have for the company though.

I love Tree Tech and they are rather affordable an number of my friends now use them because they are good and have good prices. The guy in our area if Jeff Pilot. http://www.treetechinc.com/index.htm

I've had both Tree TEch and Friendly Tree come out for estimates. Not sure who we'll use.

Another thumbs down for Friendly Tree Service.

Although they did a great job on removing an enormous tree which had died in my back yard a couple of years ago (they had a crane and took sections of the tree over the roof of my house....I was scared that it would all come crashing down, but it didn't, thank goodness)....the owner tried to stiff me on the invoice as well (which had been 'corrected' by writing in figures on top of an existing figure, not crossed out and the new amount written in above or below).

I didn't have a calculator on me when he came to do the quote and I signed the contract. Later, I realised that I was being overcharged on the State tax and I phoned them. I kept getting an answerphone, but evenutally I managed to speak to someone and I said that I didn't want the work to commence until it could be rectified, and we went over step by step with the amount charged for each piece of work being done (tree removal, stump grinding, additional trees having branches removed etc.).

On the day that the crane and workmen arrived, I asked the foreman where the manager was as I had a problem with the invoice and was told he was on his way. He never turned up and I could only leave voicemail messages for him.

Shortly after I was alarmed when I checked my credit card bill online (Chase Visa). I had been overcharged by Friendly Tree Service....I honestly can't remember how much it was but I think it was at least in the region of about $300. I phoned Chase Visa and explained the situation (also I commented that I was worried that FTS may be committing some kind of insurance fraud with NJ State). They put some kind of hold on the payment to FTS and I understand that FTS were only re-imbursed by the amount I had agreed with Chase to be the correct and fair amount.

I never heard again from FTS.

Tree Tech did a good job removing two huge trees from my yard. It wasn't the cleanest job, but the guys worked hard and the price was very good.

Also try AIM Tree Service. We used him to remove a large dying tree in our old house. If you search the archives his number will come up, I think his name is Ed.

We had to have 2-3 MASSIVE trees cut down, one as recently as 2 months ago. I called around last year for estimates, knowing we had to get these trees out sooner or later, and the prices I received left me numb. I asked around and was given Visa Tree Service in Summit. I've been using them and recommending them ever since. Last year was their first big job for us and they did a huge tree trimming in our back yard. It was amazing the amount of light that got through after that. They are courteous, fast and below cost of all the others. I told Visa it was okay to put me down as a "call to" for future clients because I really like their service. No one can believe their prices and how great they are. Give them a call and feel free to 'whisper' if you need more. Carlos @ Visa Tree Service - 908-482-2213.

Has anyone used Maplewood Tree Experts? I just got a quote from them that seems reasonable but I will defnitely ask Visa Tree Service for a quote as well.

I've used Maplewood Tree for years and years. They're reliable, they're local and Carlos (the owner) is adorable to look at.

Lash: His name is "Carlo".

Another thumbs up for Tree Tech

We've used Maplewood Tree Experts for several tree removal jobs, and tree thinning etc - highly recommend.

We had a good experience with Paul Jost (PJ Trees) when we needed to have a dead tree cut down last fall.

jab,

We like PJ Trees too but I can't seem to get in touch with Paul right now. (Have a couple of trees we want gone.) What number do you have for him?

Thanks.

I'm not sure where I have his number anymore, unfortunately, but I got his number from MOL to begin with, but maybe you can find it with the search function.

The number I have for Paul at PJ Tree is: 973.763.7052.

We used them to take out two trees and relocate another tree. Very reasonably priced.

I've been very happy with Brennan Tree Service.

So, approximately how much should one expect to pay to have a decent-sized, mature, perhaps dead or dying tree removed? Does that include *grinding the stump* (yeech, can't say I like THAT phrase)?? Does accessibility to the street impact price, i.e, if it's behind the house?

I apologize for a slight thread drift, but have a tree removal related question.

Has anyone ever had a large dead tree removed that also had a very thick vine of poison ivy growing up it? This poison ivy is SO mature that it actually makes the dead tree look like it's alive, except all the branches coming off the dead trunk are actually branches from the ivy vine with huge, leaves-of-three that are each about 9 inches long and brimming with clusters of tiny white berries.

This tree is just over the boarder of our property line, but since I have a boisterous lab and 2 young kids, it's in my interest to have it removed.

I'd appreciate any referrals or cost ballparks if anyone has had the unfortunate experience of dealing with this much poison ivy. I have a feeling it is going to be a very expensive prospect and want to get a clue before approaching my neighbor. I assume we'll be paying the entire bill.

Pdg: Go with tree tech they removed 2 big trees from my yard and did a good job at a very reasonable price.

and what were those prices?

I really can't remember the prices we did one in the fall so it was cheaper . I am going to say around 500-700 but please don't quote me. They will give you a free quote if you call. Ask for Jeff Pilot he is the guy in our area.

O-tay, Buttwheat, thanks....

We used SavATree a little over a year ago after getting an estimate substantially lower than Maplewood Tree Service. (I first contacted Brennan Tree Service but they never got back to me.) However, SavATree did a lousy job of grinding the stump and a part of me feels I should have left the stump there. Whoever you use, try to be there when they finish so you can examine their work. Or, if that is not possible because of the noise or other reasons, come back before they leave.

If you have questions about their job, it's better to ask them while they are still there.

I've used Visa Tree twice and I was very happy with their work.

I was pleased with Spring House Tree Service (908) 273-6211. I got their name from the facilities manager at Paper Mill (who has extremely low tolerance for anything less than excellent service). Spring House gave me the best quote on trimming some gimungous trees around my house.

i just used PJTrees today to remove a rotting-from-the-inside-out weeping cherry. cost me $200 for tree removal and stump grinding. and he was super nice. i'd use him again. we also loved jeff at tree-tech. they did great work thinning a tree a couple years ago. would have used him except they couldn't get to our tree for a couple of weeks. now i know 2 tree guys i'd recommend. good luck.
