Advice on Summer programs for a CHS Junior archived

Jan 5, 2014 at 12:01pm
Does anyone have experience with educational Summer programs (in US or abroad) for a High School Junior? We're looking for a meaningful educational and/or volunteer experience that will teach about the wider world.
Lots of colleges have summer programs for high school students. My daughter went to Cornell Summer College after her sophomore (3 week program) and junior (6 weeks) years at CHS. She got college credit for the courses she took. She met students from all over the country.

What type of program do you have in mind? There are so many possibilities. Summer pre college programs can be one option.
My daughter also attended a 3 week college program at Cornell. She received college credit and had a great experience.
Not inexpensive but well worth it. The program is very well run,

And very old -- I went to it.

Of course we studied by candlelight and the courses were in Latin.

Franklin and Marshall Hosts the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth...
Here's a blurb from F&M's web site.....worth looking at (I am college alum).

"The events include Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talented Youth (CTY) summer program, which has operated at F&M for more than 30 years. F&M hosts the highest number of participants in CTY's summer program for school-age children among its sites around the world, with 1,200 participants and 150 staff staying at the College during two three-week sessions."

Those programs sound very interesting, but definitely a bit pricey, even with the college credit. Think we're leaning towards something that will be service-oriented and globally broadening - something that will be eye opening about how other cultures live.

Any ideas there?

A high school junior is too old for CTY.

"Service-oriented" trips don't necessarily mean that they are less expensive. The ones that I know of are just as or more expensive than trips that are purely for tourism. But you may want to contact one of those summer program consultants who match students with programs.

How about looking for a job as an intern at a non-profit that fits your kid's area of interest? Last year when we were at the Transit Museum in Brooklyn, they said that they like to hire high school interns for the summer. I know that AMNH does the same. Many other smaller non-profits do, too.

Also, there's the NJ Governor's school.

i know a family who sent their high school aged children here...: http://www.rusticpathways.com/

This should be enough for ya! (taken from Columbia's Counseling Ctr. weekly newsletter)

I am interested in this too for a student entering 10th grade over the summer. He is not academically strong so wondering I fthese above programs offered as college credit have minimum GPA requirements? Other ideas that are more team-building, self-development, volunteerism focused rather than academic. Thoughts?
