No, I don't buy dogs ... I rescue them. I'm happy to adopt her and will continue medical treatment but will not reimburse for past expenses. Please let me know if your friend changes her mind.

Sounds like an experience we had when considering getting a companion for Keegan. They wanted someone to adopt their dog but with a hefty fee since they'd already put so much into her.

The dog doesn't have any medical issues.

My friend is making sure the dog is fully vetted micro-chipped and spayed before she goes to a new home, she doesn't want someone to try to breed her.

So she is asking a adoption fee, that is basically the equivalent of what it would be if someone had to do all the vetting on their own.

Also, why is your friend looking to "re-home" the puppy? Is she from a rescue or decided she didn't want the dog. I may know someone but they would ask all these questions including cq's question before doing anything.

She is asking $600.00 - She paid $1800.00 for the dog, and is getting Tiny fully vetted,

She is asking what it will cost if the new owner had to do all the vetting on their own. Tiny will have all her vaccinations, dewormings,rabies shot, microchip, spaying and 6 month of Heart guard treatments, in addition to her bed, leash, toys, and crate, so basically the new owner will need to buy food, nothing more.

Unfortunately Tiny was a impulse buy and my friend really didn't realize how much work a puppy is.

That's just wrong. If your friend loves the dog but can't keep it for whatever reason she should be more concerned with finding the dog a good home rather than making back the money. $600 for a rescue is ridiculous. And since she is basically selling a dog this should be in the classified with the other "Pets for Sale" ads.

I agree with you however, Right or wrong, I'm just trying to help find the dog a home, nothing more.

Suggest to your friend that she contact Yorkie Rescue. At 5 months old,even though she is not housebroken (she is or she isn't. There is no "almost")I am sure they have a waiting list of loving homes,who would love to have a puppy,and who recognize that a dog is not a commodity and are not interested in getting a return on their"investment"

Of all the sad stories I have heard coming through rescue the ones that infuriate me and break my heart are the ones where the dog just wasn't loved.

I hope the puppy finds a good home. It is not her fault that she was bought by someone who had more money than good sense.

We actually looked into the Northeast Yorkie Rescue and their adoption fee for young health dogs is $500-$750.00.

So her asking $600.00, for a healthy, pure-bred, fully vetted dog in my opinion may be a bit high, but not at all unreasonable. Hopefully someone will give her a home soon.

not to SELL a dog! i think you should have this thread pulled. there are PLENTY of dogs in shelters that need homes. some pure breed. even the jac doesn't ask for six hundred dollars!

how about she does the right thing for the dog and allows someone to adopt her for whatever it cost to have her fixed. then let your friend consider this a lesson to be learned.

Just for the record, I can give Tiny a loving home tomorrow but won't reimburse your friend. She can keep the bed, leash, bowls and whatever else ... I have all that. I just want the dog.

But Janetlynn---Yorkie Rescue is a NON-PROFIT, established organization, and the adoption fees are to provide more places for more rescues, buy the basics like food and grooming supplies, and the BIGGEST expense---medical care. The situation is totally different here---you have a pet owner, who for whatever reason---and I hate to put it this way--but it looks like she made a bad investment and wants to recoup some of her losses.

I'm sorry that this poor little thing has been caught in the crossfire, but if she really cares about the dog, let her go to a good home for a token adoption fee.

At least pay $3.99 and pay for a Classified Ad along with this thread.

The bottom line is that Janet is trying to find a home for this dog and that should be the focus - she is just trying to do good for the poor animal. She didn't set the terms and conditions so maybe if everyone would just stick a sock in it then maybe she will find a home for her.

Yes her friend is a fruitcake and completely irresponsible (and I agree probably just trying to recoup her lost $$) but please just think of the dog!

I agree with what riverside and calli have written... this little yorkie ie stuck in the middle, through no fault of its own.... and as much as we think or don't think about the present owner, it is not the dpg's fault.
I wonder if rescue asked an owner's drop off fee?

In any case, please let's think about the pup who needs a home. I also believe it should be given for a nominal adoption fee but..i don't get to set the price and conditions as this is not my dog. i can only hope little yorkie gets a new home soon.

I'm not paying for a classified ad, because It's not my dog.
I have ZERO say in the decision making for the dog.

I don't need to be told my friend made a bad decision, I know this, but the decision was made and now I'm trying to help her deal with it for Tiny's sake.

Just curious, what does everyone feel is an appropriate adoption fee, just so I can go back with the info to my friend.

For an owner surrender like this I would say $100 shows good faith on all sides.

Has your friend called the breeder to see if they would take Tiny back even without a partial refund? I would hope a good breeder would not want to see any of their dogs going through this shuffle.

Honestly, I think your friend will find someone willing to pay $600 for the dog, but that's not necessarily good. A Yorkie that small from a breeder or pet store is likely to be $1500+, so you may attract bargain shoppers.

Your friend needs to screen very carefully, and completely avoid anyone who doesn't know what they're doing (like a guy who wants to surprise his girlfriend with a puppy). Very small Yorkies like Tiny are likely to have some expensive health issues down the line (knee and hip problems, bladder stones, broken bones). They're at risk around kids and other pets. They are notoriously difficult to housebreak. They are not a good choice for an inexperienced dog owner.

Look for someone with previous Yorkie experience, or someone very motivated to learn. If I were your friend, I'd try to find a doting, mature person who wants a constant companion. The kind of person who will dress Tiny in ridiculous costumes and mail her picture out with Christmas cards. Yorkies love that stuff.

Tell your friend to be flexible with the fee. I know it sucks to have lost so much money, but if your friend finds a great home for Tiny, I think the peace of mind will be worth a lot more than $600.

A normal pet adoption fee is about 150-200 for rescues, which this is.

I agree with this and all other sentiments like it. It may not be Janetlynn's fault, but if she wants to post it here, she needs to be ready to take the heat. Maybe it sucks, but that's just TOUGH! If it were me, I would seriously and actively pursue Yorkie Rescue or the original breeder. Although it wouldn't surprise me to find this dog was purchased at a pet store, and not from a breeder.

As I said earlier, I have a friend who may be interested in the puppy. Can you please whisper me all the information. She would like to know how much your friend paid for the micro-chipping and the spaying. It just sounds as if your friend is trying to also re-coop the cost of what she spent to purchase the dog rather than just the vet/micro chip fees. I believe she might be willing to reimburse your friend for some of the cost but not sure she will do $600.

As the others above have said...it is unfortunate your friend did this impulse buy but she has to understand that if she wants a quick turn around for the adoption of the puppy, she can't expect to get that amount. Or perhaps she should advertise in the city or craigslist - that might bring the return she is looking for.

I understand where you are coming from but please do not mistake this situation as a "rescue". This is a private attempt to re-home a pet that is unwanted. Molly is a rescue. All the cats and kittens CQ& co. place, are rescues. This is a re-sale. It stinks. JanetLynn by helping her friend is brokering the deal. There have been 2 interested parties,lash and dk's friend. By all rights the owner should be paying them to take the pup off her hands.

I would urge you not to advertise a small dog like Tiny on craigslist. There are just too many shady people up to no good who would jump at a chance to use a dog like her.

First let me say, - I would NEVER suggest to anyone to give any animal away to anyone for free. Animals that are given away for free or as gifts are not valued, and even worse when people do give their pets away for free the pet ends up as Bait, or snake food or being sold to Laboratories for experiments.

Ok...so now I'm a broker? Just to be clear, The definition of a broker is - An individual or firm that charges a fee or commission for executing buy and sell orders submitted by an investor.
I'm not getting anything for helping find Tiny a home for except a headache right now.

Seriously, no good deed goes unpunished. Some of you just like to argue, talk down and get off the focus which is ultimately finding the dog a good home.
