"The Affair" over Lunch at Lobster Roll

I am unashamed to admit that I adore the actors (The Wire! Luther! Maura Tierney!) in this cheesy drama and would like to hear from anybody else who can stand it.

Trailer looks interesting. Im curious, what does Lobster Roll represent? Is their initial meeting at that restaraunt?

I like it. So far. I didn't really watch The Wire but I'm not really convinced by either Alison or Noah's accents.

One of the character is a waitress so a lot of scenes take place there. Great shots of Montauk generally, in fact.

Agree on the accents -- they are both very clipped.

I really like the way that they split the show in half with Noah's point of view then Alison's . Is there really a ranch in Montauk ? Whats in the cooler with the Black Fish ?

I was ready to give up on the show after the first half hour. Part 2 got me interested.

There are a couple of ranches in Montauk. The most notable one being the Deep Hollow Ranch which boasts that it is the "oldest working ranch in the USA"

I like the show, especially the setting. I am wondering if they actually filmed inside LUNCH. And are they filming in Montauk, etc.

A lot of it was filmed in late spring on LI, some in Montauk, where storefronts were changed. It looked to me like the TV LUNCH is a set (I had lunch there at around the same time), but according to its FB page, it was the real deal.

There was a scene on the beach in Montauk where you could see the lighthouse off in the background.
I don't think there is a beach near the lighthouse where there is a very rocky coastline.

Newsday has it covered.

I really wanted to like the show- its totally up my alley. But does anyone else feel like the acting of the two main characters is bad? I just can't buy it- I keep seeing them acting. And, although the two points of view is a neat formula- I actually get bored watching the same story told twice. But that might just be me. I am finished with Ray Donovan and am bored and cranky as a result.

Opinions? Ouch. The writing is so bad! There are way too many cheesy moments and nothing is happening. I'll continue to watch but I don't see this lasting, unless something big happens soon. And what's with the sex scenes in slow-mo? Oy.

Agreed. Disappointed.

We watched the first three episodes of The Affair and decided we're done. The acting's not good, the writing's no better and the characters are smarmy and sometimes ridiculous. Maybe they're supposed to be.

After enjoying Orange Is the New Black so much, I'm having trouble finding traction with another show.

I watched the first three episodes of Outlander, and although I thought it was good, I didn't rally like it. Not my style. More for women, if I may say.

(While on the subject, I watched Parenthood for a season and a half or so but I'm finding that show totally unwatchable now. All the characters have become parodies of themselves. The Dax Sheppard and Craig T Nelson characters are so obnoxious and unrealistic that I want to kill them. (I never liked Sheppard in anything. He's among the worst actors out there, if you ask, me.) The Ray Romano character is relentlessly annoying and the "Joel" character is terrible. The Max character doesn't grow or learn at all. I can't bear to watch the scenes with Dylan. And Bonnie Bedelia looks like she's rather be anywhere else. Such terrible writing. It's like HOUSE: the last season or so the character got so unbearably obnoxious that the show became unwatchable. )

I need to get back into Orange is the New Black.

Mr. Shh just had an interesting theory, that there will be a real twist. Alison and her boss are actually having an affair and they kill her husband and frame Noah. (Or some other total spin.)

Given what is currently available , The Affair is not bad . I like the location , the story . If all else fails & you haven't watched it yet there is " House of Cards" . Your in luck if you have not watched the first two seasons.

I really enjoyed it. Is it great cinema? Nah, it's a bit titillating and silly at times, but I really thought it was fun.

I think I'll start watching House of Cards. You're not the first to recommend it.

The Affair is very slow going. I do like the location, however. Didn't like House of Cards at all.

Loved the first season.

Grrrrrr....

The original British House of Cards was much better. Both are worth watching.

I watched the first episode of House of Cards today, based on the reco here. It's a bit busy and Spacey and Wright seem so busy acting that it's hard to tell at times what's going on but I'm gonna stick with it for at least a few more episodes and see what happens.

By the way, I saw "Dear White People" over the weekend and disliked it intensely. Anyone else? It was striving for amateurishness.

Also, watched "Very Bad Things" (1998) on DVD. (Christian Slater, Daniel Stern, Cameron Diaz) It suggests and predates "The Hangover" and outdoes it by a country mile. Very crude, violent and nasty, with some real funny bits. Most of the characters are dead by the end. I liked it. Watch at your own risk.

Ok, so I finally watched this week's episode. In the police interview portion, when we saw Noah's clip the detective said he is divorced and never sees his kids. In Allison's portion he just said he has been married 25 years. So either (1) their interviews are in different timelines entirely, or (2) the detective was just lying trying to build rapport, or (3) these are totally different stories that the author is trying out. One noticeable thing from the flashbacks was how Noah's wife wore a totally different dress to the outdoor party in Noah's flashback than she was wearing in Allison's flashback. At the time I thought it was just supposed to show that they remember things differently, but maybe they are literally different versions of the same story? Or, maybe I'm trying too hard to put logic to what is just meant to be a guilty pleasure.

Alison is always wearing something more revealing or feminine in Noah's version (although the last episode may not have followed that same formula). I didn't catch that the wife wore a different dress though. Maybe it is better than we thought if here we are still thinking/talking about it.

Thoughts after this episode?
Definitely something going on between Alison and Oscar that is being uncovered a bit too slowly. Obviously Scotty is the one in the accident. The scenes with Noah and Oscar were weird.
Did you drive back to the city after the wedding, the detective asked, and Alison's more NYC attire. Do we think she and Noah got together and moved to NYC?

I am wondering about the same things. Hopefully, the next episode will move the story forward beyond all the frantic constant sexual content...we get that already. /grin

Anyone see last night's episode? The story moved a bit forward, finally.
