I just got a new car, and it's black -- my first black car ever. I am told that black cars especially need waxing and "Simonizing" to keep them looking their best. I plan to really baby this car; it's my first one with leather seats and "the works," and I will be getting it washed once a week. But do I need to "Simonize" it too? What exactly is this? The dealer recommended it, but they do it at the dealership, so I think he was just trying to sell me on something. Is it a permanent treatment, or do I need to do it over and over? How is it different from waxing? How much does it cost? I tried Googling it but nothing helpful really came up.
"Simonizing" is often used as a generic term for waxing.
Read your owners manual for their instructions on appearance care. A brand new care (my assumption) with a clear coat finish (assumption again) usually needs to be waxed a couple of times a year. Since on a new car oxidation of the paint isn't an issue don't use anything to abrasive. You can wear the finish off, believe it or not.
OK, that's helpful. It's not a brand-new car, actually -- it's a "certified pre-owned" car about two years old. But it's in such beautiful shape that I want to do what I can to keep it this way. It was waxed when I picked it up, so I guess I'm good to go for a little while. I guess I will ask at my car wash about waxing, and see what that entails. Do you have to drop the car off for a few hours, or it is quick? It's funny: this is my fourth or fifth car since moving to NJ many years ago from NYC, but the first one I have ever planned to care for in this manner, so I have never bothered with waxing before.
You may also want to investigate protection for the leather seats. They can wear out, fade, dry out. Look up leather dressing. If you are especially looking to keep it for a long time, my cousin sells sheepskin seat covers.
Whisper to me if you want to know about seat covers.
Zoesky, even two years old counts as "new". Most car washes will spray a liquid wax when they wash your car, but I find that more trouble (streaked windshield) than it is worth. If you want a good wax job and don't want to do it yourself look for an auto detailing shop. People have posted about these places in the past on MOL.
And if I wasn't a gentleman, I would ask what type of car you bought.
Actually from what I've read you car should be polished once or twice a year and waxed every couple of months (depending on the type of wax you use).
Most newer cars can get by with turtle wax.
Unfortunately our "new" car has been bombarded by acorns the past week or so and even has what appears to be squirrel scratch marks on the roof. So much for keeping it looking new.
I have a 1990 Lexus and recently gave it the fall waxing. Simply put. Wax twice a year (spring and fall) Wash as needed and condition the seats as you go. Unless you're the type who is a fanatic about their car don't worry about it. The only difference in owning a black car is it looks great when clean but real dirty real fast. I buy silver when I can..... Mike
wax only lasts about a month or so. It's better to us an acrylic like Klasse, which can last six months or so...A good site for all of this is: http://autopia.org/
Thanks!
