Posted By: truth2010Mammabear - do you take the train to and from the city every day?
Posted By: TigerLillyI think that NJT should put signs up in the cars that state they are quiet cars and be more clear and firm about the instructions of what that means. There's a lot of ambiguity, I think, which results into a lot of unhappy patrons on both sides of it.
Posted By: critterloverHow would I know the Quiet Car from any other? If there is no sign... I sit in the wrong car... I would be so humiliated if I was chatting!
I want to avoid disturbing anyone else but if there isn't any indication of the Quiet car policy... how will we know until it's too late?
Posted By: mammabearI don't get the constant complaints about the quiet car. If someone were annoying me that badly, I'd either ignore them or move.

Then the quiet car is not for you. It's for people who don't want to ignore annoying chatter. Annoying chatterers can sit in the rest of the train. Not sure why this is hard to get...
Posted By: spqrIs it that hard to not talk for 35 minutes???

Posted By: mammabearIs it that hard to give and take or do we now need to post another thread on MOL???

Sometimes, yes.
Then you would be asked to move to a non-quiet car...by other passengers...and if that didn't work, then the conductor would be summoned...easy fix.

there are only two quiet cars. if one cannot refrain from having a conversation for 35 minutes, they can move to one of the 6-8 non-quiet cars. Those who want quiet after a long stressful day do not have the option of moving to another car.
Posted By: truth2010mammabear, i am going to say this in the nicest way possible and hope you will read this with an open mind and heart. you say you would ignore someone who is annoying you or move, but you seem unable to do that on this message board. if a post does not apply or appeal to you, or if you feel it's been brought up before, you do not have to reply with snark, you can make the conscious decision to ignore it.
Posted By: truth2010if we are all a little more considerate and compassionate we will all be happier, healthier and less stressed.

The 8:03 was already a car short this morning, so not off to a great start. I was in the window seat of a 3-seat bench. At South Orange a middle-aged married couple sat next to me and immediately began chatting, mostly about her plans for the day. When she took out a book I thought she might begin reading -- but, no, she kept chatting. After 10 minutes I turned to her and said "Excuse me, but this is the quiet car." She said "We are speaking in a low voice, which is fine for the quiet car." And then turned back to her husband and resumed their conversation. They chatted all the way into the city -- even as the car got ferociously crowded, and nobody else was talking (in fact, she just got louder).
So, was she correct? Is it OK to have a ride-long conversation in the "quiet car" if you think only the people in your immediate vicinity can hear you?
