Did the heron actually manage to swallow that fish, or did it give up?

I doubt it. I stayed watching for about 1/2 hour, then I had to leave. There are Eagles in the area. Probable that and Eagle or the resident Falcon stole it before the Heron was able to figure out how to swallow it.

On the Delaware River, I saw an Eagle steal a fish from a Merganser.
