The Strollers Community Theater in Maplewood will hold auditions for their upcoming production of THE MUSIC MAN on Tuesday February 19th and Wednesday February 20th at 7:00P (Call backs February 21st) at the Burgdorff Center for the Performing Arts, 10 Durand Road, Maplewood, NJ. Performances are Fri & Sat May 3 & 4, 10 &11, and 17 & 18 at 8:00 PM and Sun, May 5 & 12 at 2:00 PM. THE MUSIC MAN is the story of the arrival in River City, Iowa of a fast-talking traveling salesman, “Professor” Harold Hill, in July of 1912. He cons the locals into starting a boy’s band to keep the youngsters out of trouble and along the way falls in love with Marian, the librarian and piano teacher. It is chockfull of wonderful music: Ya Got Trouble, Seventy-Six Trombones, Lida Rose, Marian the Librarian, Til There Was You, and The Wells Fargo Wagon. SINGERS: Please bring sheet music of 16 bars for the accompanist. ALL: Bring comfortable shoes for a dance audition (we just need to see if you can follow simple dance instructions) Sides will be provided for readings. Cast break-down: Prof. Harold Hill: (Baritone) Often described as a likable Cad and Con Man. He is a bit of a lothario as as well. He thinks he can win over Marianwith ease. Marian Paroo: (Soprano) A slightly stuffy librarian and piano teacher. She sees through Harold but is eventually swayed by what he has done for her brother Winthrop. Wintrhop: (Tenor) 7-14: Marian’s lisping younger brother. Mrs. Paroo: (Soprano): 40’s-50’s: Irish accented Mother of Marian and Winthrop. Mayor Shinn (non-singer): 40’s-60’s: A blustery politician with great comic timing. Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn: (Soprano-Alto): Mayor Shinn’s peacock of a wife and head of the Ladie’s Auxiliary Society for the Classic Dance. Marcellus Washburn: (Baritone and Dancer): Harold’s old friend and former partner. He has given up his con man ways and is engaged to his boss’s niece, Ethel Toffelmier. The Barbershop Quartet: Four bickering businessmen and School Board members: Olin Britt: (Bass) Oliver Hix: (Baritone) Ewart Dunlap: (High Baritone) Jacey Squires: (Tenor) Pick-a-Little Ladies: The female counterparts to the Barber-shop quartet. They are the gossipy girlfriends who should be able to pull off haughty expressions: Alma Hix, Maud Dunlap, Mrs. Squires and Ethel Toffelmier. Amaryllis: (Soprano): 7-14: Marian’s young piano student. Tommy Djilas: (Singer and Dancer): 15-20: The town troublemaker who is secretly dating the Mayor’s eldest daughter, Zaneeta. Zaneeta: (Singer-Dancer): 15-20: The Mayor’s eldest daughter Constable Locke/Conductor: 40’2-60’s Charlie Cowell: 40’s-60’s: A traveling anvil salesman set to ex-pose Harold Hill as an imposter. Ensemble: Singers and Dancers of all ages are encouraged to come.
