Information:

Sixteen years ago, a group of Temple B’nai Abraham members, led by Rabbi Kulwin, began reading together. Since then, the members of the TBA Book Group have read over 140 books together, and continue to read and discuss together with enthusiasm and enjoyment. If you like to read, and can at least occasionally be available on the first Thursday of every month join us! Current selections are generally grouped in two or three months of a particular theme, are posted on the temple’s website, http://www.tbanj.org/congregational-learning/book-group#current. Books are almost always available easy from area libraries, or online, or at local bookstores. And when they are not, the Temple will secure several copies of the book for us to share. The early fall 2015 selections’ theme is New York Times Best Sellers. The books could not be more different in subject, but each was a best seller for many weeks. Blume and Doerr are authors of note, and both possess that rare ability to move and provoke while ensuring a reading experience of genuine pleasure. So on Thursday, September 3, 7:30 PM, In the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume will be discussed. Elizabeth, New Jersey. 1952. In a matter of weeks, three airliners fall from the skies onto young Judy Blume’s home town. With those events as backdrop, the unparalleled storyteller weaves together generations of families affected by those tragedies, simultaneously painting a remarkable picture of a particular time and place. And then on Thursday, October 1, 7:30 PM, the group will explore, All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. Two stories converge. The first, of Marie-Laure, blind from age six, who flees with her father from Nazi-occupied Paris. The second, of Werner, a German orphan who becomes a hero in the Hitler Youth. Doerr uncovers good and kindness in most unexpected ways. A National Book Award finalist. The book group is free and open to the community. RSVP 973-994-2290 or register online at www.tbanj.org
