It was 1933, and students were showing up at the brand-new Adult School (SOMAS) for classes–and at local picture palaces for the latest movies starring Mae West, the Marx Brothers, Cary Grant and a certain King named Kong. We’ll look back at some of the biggest sensations of 90 years ago, a pivotal time when Hollywood was attracting new audiences with sensational material and daring approaches–and was about to run headlong into a battle with censors that would last 35 years.

STEPHEN WHITTY has been a writer and critic for the Star-Ledger, the New York Daily News, nj.com and Fortune.com, as well as a college lecturer, film festival host, interviewer and juror.
