Explorations for Sale of SO Village Hall

On Monday June 23, 2014, at 8pm, at SOPAC main stage, the South Orange Board of Trustees will consider issuing an RFEI (Request for experience and information) for the sale of South Orange Village Hall. At their conference session this past Monday, the BOT recommended issuing the RFEI for the sale of the building which would also include the neighboring parking lots. The BOT further suggested that the RFEI be issued without restrictions; that is, there would be no requirement to maintain the Village Hall building. While Village Hall has protection as a public building under the federal and state historic registers, once it is transferred to a private entity, only the Village\'s Historic Preservation Commission can deny permission to demolish the building. However, while the HPC can forestall demolition, ultimately, it cannot prevent it. Village Hall should be preserved as the center of our Village.
